This is THE birthday book from my childhood

Oh my God, I remember this book from when I was little. My sister and I, both born in January, used to borrow it from my Aunty and spend hours poring over it discussing what cakes we could have. We were only allowed these cakes on "special" birthdays which, hmmmm, were only 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10. Not sure what that big gap in the middle was about, clearly we were deprived children. Anyway, this was THE book. And it still is in so many ways. My two year old took off with it as soon as it arrived and spent what seemed like hours (but was probably only a blissful 20 minutes) flicking through it. He quickly grasped that he could choose something for his third birthday and eventually decided on the rocket cake (balanced precariously on cardboard fins, great). It was delightful to see the magic transferring down a generation, which is why I give it such a high rating. It is now a bit dated though... I had forgotten that it's divided into "For Boys" and "For Girls" sections. Rather hilariously, the "For Girls" section contains a sewing machine cake, a sewing basket cake, a dressing table cake and, just when you think it couldn't get any worse, a stove cake(!). That aside, it's much more creative and exciting than the more modern edition and it also contains a lot of ideas to kick start your own creativity.

Wouldn't be a birthday without a cake from this book!

Birthday Cakes from the "Australia Women's Weekly" book have been a feature of family birthdays for about 3 decades now, and my daughter's are using them for THEIR children's birthdays. There have been some spectacular fails, and some spectacular successes too. My children loved choosing their cake, which their Mum would make with every effort to mimic the one in the book. The recipes are easy, and the instructions are clear. Measurements are metric, of course, but are easy enough to adapt if you need to.

Cakebook Classic

This is the cakebook every Australian family had on the shelf in the 1980s. When you asked a kid what cake they were having for their birthday, they would just name a cake from this book. It comes from an era that predated the fondant/rolled icing perfection that seems so standard now. These cakes are creative artworks: rustic and querky. Decorations are made mostly with lollies and biscuits, so each slice is a taste adventure. This book is gold, and I am thrilled to have my new copy.

The books follow Peter Hatcher, his little brother Fudgie, baby sister Tootsie, their neighbor Sheila Tubman, various pets, and minor characters through New York City and on treks to suburbs and camps.

Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing is the first of these entertaining yarns. Peter, because he's the oldest, must deal with Fudgie's disgusting cuteness, his constant meddling with Peter's stuff, and other grave offenses, one of which is almost too much to bear. All these incidents are presented with the unfailing ear and big-hearted humor of the masterful Judy Blume. Though some of her books for older kids have aroused controversy, the Hatcher brothers and their adventures remain above the fray, where they belong. (Peter's in fourth grade, so the book is suitable for kids ages 8 and older.)

It's never too late in the game for "Fudge"!

My brother and I are "Irish Twins", so we were in the same grade throughout our whole school career. He got all of the awesome, tenured teachers, whose students loved them so much that they still continued to visit them well into their middle and high school years; their classrooms had epic decor themes like "under the sea" or "summer fun."

I was a straggler kid, looking in from the outside and always longing for what he had. My assortment of teachers were either (a) fresh out of college and trying experimental forms of teaching (ugh), (b) had extreme chips on their shoulders and were organizing unions to stick it to the man, or (c) filing for divorce. This equated to bare walls and zero pizza parties. The agony!

Worst yet, we didn't read any of the cool books all the other classes were reading! I remember getting sick and tired of hearing of this baby named "Fudge" (of all the crazy names), and all the trouble that he got into, from some friends in other classes.

So now, all these years later, I finally understand what all the hype was about, and for once it wasn't overstated. I LOVED Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing! Peter Hatcher, the 9-year-old protagonist, has a pretty great setup. He lives in New York City, close to Central Park, he's loving his 4th grade class, has nice friends...except his 2-year-old little brother, Fudge, keeps ruining things. He's a the cutest little monster you ever saw.

I would have loved to have read this as a child, especially when my little sister came into the world when I was 8. I didn't like her. She was a cutie, but she just disrupted everything. I felt like no one understood where I was coming from, least of all my parents, who could see no wrong in anything that she did. That's the beauty of this book, because while it is hilarious and cute, it's not patronizing and adult. I love the relationship Peter has with his mom--she's a bit of a sarcastic wit, and I like that.

One thing that made me laugh was when Peter was describing how cautious he had to be about walking in Central Park alone because of muggers and dope pushers. I thought to myself, this is not the NYC of You've Got Mail. This is the NYC of Klute in 1972! I will definitely be continuing with the series, and very soon.

Timeless and laugh out loud enjoyable.

My 8yo old son loved this book. He picked this one up on his own without any coaxing from me for reading time every evening. He laughed out loud several times and had to stop and tell me about whatever funny thing was happening. He was so surprised to find out that his book wasn't written recently.

I recommend all Judy Blume Books for gradeschoolers to read all of her series of books for this age group.

The tales of a Fourth grade nothing are about the every day experiences in the life of a child that attends school. Popularity, bullying, fitting in, inadequacy, and any other child hood emotion is touched on in her smart series for younger children. I love all of her books for this age group. Any one with a child who does not like to read, will find it easier to get into once they realize that these stories identify so many emotionals that our children deal with on a daily basis in school and with their friends.

I've used the Kennan book many times; only 2 years ago I used another book and I lived to regret doing so! The Kennan is easily the finest counterpoint text on the market.

My big mistake was to purchase a "used" workbook....dumb, dumb, dumb! Next time I teach Counterpoint at SMU I'll get a NEW workbook!

Excellent: stands proudly beside Fux's work

Providing a wide variety of exercises, to the point and easy to understand information, and a sturdy framework of guidelines from which to begin a study of counterpoint. I highly suggest using this tax in conjunction with Johann Joseph Fux's Gradus ad Parnassum, the study of counterpoint; they compliment, support, and explain each other perfectly.

I love this book. I bought it after having borrowed a copy from a fellow composer. I finally decided to give him his original copy back and purchase my own. This book is well-written, easy to follow, and thorough. There are a lot of other great Counterpoint books out there, but this one provides examples and explanations that are really friendly to students of all abilities.

The doorway to success in hypnosis is the Unconscious Mind. Your Unconscious Mind not only holds information that is outside your consciousness, but it also manages sensations and body functions. A moment before reading this sentence, you probably were not aware of the feeling of your feet against the floor, or your back against the chair. You have sensations coming to your body all the time, but you remain unaware of most of them. In addition to managing all these sensations, your Unconscious Mind keeps your heart beating, your blood circulating, your digestion working, and your lymph system operating and makes your eyes blink without your conscious awareness. It is exciting to know that your Unconscious Mind manages all of that with perfect precision. A prime concept that we are going to explore is that your Unconscious Mind can communicate with every cell in the body. Until the mid-1980s, people could plausibly say, "Hypnosis is just in your Mind! It's not real." But recently, due to the pioneering work of Dr Deepak Chopra, scientists have begun to realize the full extent of the Mind/Body connection. Not only does information from the Mind affect the body, but there is now scientific evidence that your mental processes, mental states, and mental behaviours affect all the cells in your body all the time. Information is carried within the body in the form of electrical impulses that pass through nerve cells, or neurons. Between any two neurons, there is a gap, or synapse. In order for impulses to travel along a continuous path of nerve cells, something has to carry the impulses across the gaps. This essential task is performed by neuro-transmitters, which are chemicals that conduct electrical impulses across the synapses between nerve cells.

When neuro-transmitters were first discovered, scientists thought they were found only in the brain. Later, it was discovered that neuro-transmitters actually connect all neurons in the body, forming vast networks of 'electrical circuits'. More recently, quantum physics and quantum biology tell us that neuro-transmitters bathe every cell in the human body. This new knowledge is the key to the Mind/Body connection.

The Unconscious Mind not only manages sensations, movements and body functions, but it also actually sends information that travels to and affects billions of individual cells throughout the body, giving us health or dis-ease according to our Unconscious beliefs. Chopra describes this as your immune system constantly eavesdropping on your internal dialogue.

From the point of view of hypnosis and Neuro-Linguistic Programming, your immune system is also eavesdropping on the pictures that you hold in your head the sounds that you remember or pay attention to the feelings that you have and the concepts that your mind considers. Through the conductivity of the neuro-transmitters that surround all cells, your immune system is constantly affected by the activity of your Unconscious Mind.

There are many things we are conscious of, but the operation and health of the body is optimally a function of our Unconscious. Hypnosis allows us to begin reaching the Unconscious Mind and utilizing the Mind/Body connection. This is the beginning of our ability to manifest a number of wonderful things.

A real guide!

I admire books that gives knowledge about how, but not only what can be done. "Hypnosis: A comprehensive guide" is one of them. Just reading the book is not enough but here are helpful exercises everyone can practice.

It's a quick easy read

It's a quick easy read however I'd echo the sentiments of some reviewers who don't like the New Age references implied here. Tad James has gone on to do a lot of Huna stuff since, something that I've looked at several times and keep backing away from. It's too new agey and wishy washy for me :-).

I gave it 3 stars because what good stuff there is, is fairly well written and useful. It's a shame there isn't more depth on Estabrooks and Elman however. I read it in about an hour or so.

My preference if I had to give someone 10 books only on hypnosis, would be Monsters and Magical Sticks, Training Trances, Ledochowski's Deep Trance Training Manual, Ericksonian Approaches and Tranceformations, Elman's Hypnotherapy, Bill O'Hanlon-Solution Oriented Hypnosis, Therapeutic Trances by Gilligan and of course Erickson's own material--not necessarily in that order either.

Then again I am biased as I really enjoyed the books I've mentioned. All the mentioned books go into greater depth in their particular areas (ok, they overlap...a lot) and as far as I can tell none of them head into New Age land either.

Typos galore

While this book does have a lot of advance topics in thermodynamics relating to material science it is teeming with little errors. The course I used this for started with Kittel's Thermal Physics and switched to DeHoff when we started doing mixtures. The notation is complex (perhaps necessarily). This would be OK except for the fact that Dehoff often makes small mistakes going from one line to the next. These typos will often lead to important equations that are wrong. If you are diligent, you can often spot the errors between lines in a derivation and correct them, but beware--these are so prevalent that I've seen as many as four on one page. Once you've proof-read and edited your book it should make a good reference and you will likely know the material pretty well from scrutinizing every derivation. The content here is good it just should have been edited better.

best way to learn thermo

This is in reference to the 1st edition.

What a great book.

This is the way thermo should be taught!! Don't you hate how thermo is boring and doesn't make any sense? I took a thermo class as an undergrad using a different textbook, and it didn't make any sense. I was constantly lost, trying to catch up by learning things backwards. Most thermo books try to teach you thermo by either one of two horrible methods:
1. reverse-engineer the phase diagram, or some other example.
2. memorize the equations and apply them.

Instead, this book walks you through the derivation of the equations that people use in thermo. It even spells out the mathematics you need to work through the concepts. You don't have to memorize anything. The gradual buildup of knowledge and principles, as ordered in this book, is the only way people like me can learn thermodynamics. I used this textbook in grad school and thermodynamics finally made sense.

YOU MUST endure through the first few chapters before you begin to appreciate the book. If you stop midway, it will be a total waste of your time.

My only grip is that there were numerous typos in the 1st edition, and each reprint had different typos in different places. My version had a typo in one of the state functions which really messed me up. I hope the 2nd edition does not have any of those problems.

Since it is primarily focused on teaching you thermodynamics, I don't think it is very useful as a "quick" reference material. In other words, it teaches you how to fish, but doesn't give you the fish. If you want a reference, I believe there are books with more depth and breadth out there.

I don't think it is worth buying unless you intend to sit down and read through the first ten chapters. The latter chapters are all optional and add some breadth. But really, you are not going to buy this book for its treatment of electrochemistry.

Good methodology, chock full of errors

I like the way thermo is put together, piece by piece, adding complication in a straightforward fashion. It's easy to teach out of this book. However, the other reviews are correct - the number of errors in the equations and graphs (I'm up to 76 after 6 times through the book) is unbelievable. I've passed them along to DeHoff with no reply.
