James M. Redfield is the Edward Olson Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Classics, the Committee on Social Thought, the Committee on the Ancient Mediterranean World, and the College at the University of Chicago. He is the author of "Nature and Culture in the Iliad."

he got it right

I found much to disagree about when I read this book, but the conflict it posed was part of what made it such a great read (its often boring to read an author you completely agree with). Of all the commentaries on the Iliad I've seen, this is the one that gets the central point right. Most people focus their critic of the Iliad by assuming it is the story of Achilles. In fact, it isn't, there is another, perhaps more powerful, story lurking; in the finest tradition of Shakespearean drama the Iliad is fundamentally the tragedy of Hector. It is this duality which makes the Iliad one of the great books in human history and nature and culture is one of the few books that, in addition to providing some informative background on homeric culture, stresses this point.

Hands down, one of the best books on the Homeric hero and The Iliad currently available. The expanded edition is a much appreciated update to a classic work of literary criticism. Clearly written!

Great ending to series

I LOVE this series. LOVE. IT.

In this installment we get to learn more about Mary, and why she is doing what she is doing. The characters in this book are so fantastic. Even the super creepy ones. I cannot say too much because you should read this one for yourself so you can have a super scary experience...heheh Some one else might read this and think "she was off her rocker it's not that scary"....well to me it was!

I love reading scary books, they just make me happy. I know I have said that before, and I know people will think that is weird, but it does. I love the thrill that comes from reading a scary book.

The thought of Bloody Mary in the mirror is scary, but having her outside of the mirror is a far scarier idea. I love the connections that are brought to light in this book. I love how we get to read more "letters" from the past. I really like it when books connect the past with the present.

There is so much going on in this book. Everyone is fighting for their life...no one is safe. Mary is every where. Reading this book kept me on my toes the whole time. The author does a great job of making you feel like you need to investigate every noise that happens in the house at night, while not wanting to move for fear it may be "something"...hehe

Jess is more annoying in this installment than she was in the first book. She is selfish, and just plain stupid. In the midst of a crisis she is not someone you want to have with you. Shauna and Kitty on the other hand know how to stick together and fight.

Mary is just plain creepy. CREEPY. The author does a great job describing everything without getting to wordy. I have to admit a few times while reading I was so engrossed in the book that my heart was beating fast, my hands started sweating, and any movement in my house made me jump. It was FANTASTIC.

If you like thrillers this is a great series to read!!!

What you reap is what you sow

Frankly speaking, i think the first series is way better than the second one although it gives a clearer view on why Mary became what she is and who drove her to it. I felt a lot of sympathy for her even though i don't agree with what she is doing. The pace for the second series is quite slow and boring in the first few parts, which i think the author can do without much of it. I had to drag myself through most of it to get to the thrilling and exciting part, which is in the last few chapters.

This is a book that educate readers on evil and cruelty begets the same thing back and only kindness prevail. Perhaps it's because of what the author herself have went through in her personal life, which she mention in the Acknowledgements section. If only Mary Worth circumstances were met with more kinder people, she wouldn't have been where she is, having the need to get revenge. Tolerating any sort of cruelty certainly have its limit. Will look out for her new book in the future.

About the Author
Jovanka Houska is the 2013 Commonwealth Ladies Champion and a many-time winner of the British Women's Championship. She has represented the English team, on top board, at numerous Chess Olympiads, and qualified for the 2006 Women's World Championship. In 2006 she won the English Chess Federation Player of the Year award, the first time a female chess player had received this prestigious recognition.

Excellent Caro addition!

The Caro has been my primary weapon against 1.e4 for almost a decade and it has served me well, so well in fact I'd rather play black and face 1. e4 than play white or play against anything else.

Jovanka Houska put out a great Caro-Kann book for Everyman in 2007, and this book is largely an update of her previous work. That being said, what an enormous and excellent update it is. The first book was a slim volume of 208 pages, and this repertoire edition is 480 pages. Houska's one of the best opening writers in Everyman's stable because she doesn't just overwhelm you with variations (though there are plenty of those), rather she takes you through typical pawn structures, tabiyas, dangerous pawn pushes from the opponents, thematic counter attacks of your own etc.

In her last book she introduced the Caro audience to an alternative way to play against the advance, after 3. e5, then c5! To be fair both Peter Wells and Joe Gallagher gave this variation a cursory examination in their books, but in this new edition, Houska has devoted three chapters to it. It's a good line, played often by British GM Keith Arkell and somewhat unorthodox as most people are used to facing 3. … Bf5.

In this edition she has completely changed her original assessments on how to play against the Panov, and how to play against the 11.Bd2 Classical variation. In the Panov four knights, she's going for an early g6, and she now says that the 11. Bd2 Classical is more dangerous for the black player than once thought.

I'm not going to go through every new update, but one thing I like a lot about this book that's better than the last is the hundreds of hints, memory devices, and formulas peppered throughout the book. I don't have a great memory myself, and these signposts greatly increase the chance that I'll know what to do even if I can't remember an exact move.

This is a full repertoire against 1. e4. Yes you may come across a few things from club players not in here. 1. e4 c6 2. Bc4 comes to mind, but of those tries, most are insipid and you should be able to work out proper replies yourself.

A word of warning though; this edition is not the breezy guide she issued in 2007 and I think it's probably best for 1600+. Also Everyman has done something with this edition I've never seen them do before, they've added elongated folded back and front covers that you can use as book marks. Nice.

Very well researched

Schandorff's caro kann book has been a great basis for my black repertoire, and I didn't think I would need something else. But Houska's book had a few lines I wanted to have a look at as a second choice. It turned that I like this book even better! It's extremely well researched, and a couple of long sessions with stockfish didn't punch any holes in the analyses. I didn't even bother computer-checking the other chapters.

Of course, "anyone" can write a well-checked book these days, but Houska adds tremendous value by explaining things clearly, and spelling out easy ways to remember the lines. She also chooses well (for ambitious amateurs), which is always a difficult exercise in a repertoire book.

Anyway, highly recommended!

Good advanced manual - accessible as a primer.

An excellent book, building on her earlier Play the Caro-Kann. I coach now in a set of schools where the Caro-Kann is a staple. A number of my beginning and intermediate students actually read this book - an accomplishment with younger players who are averse to reading. I have used the earlier version for years and recommend the update.

Ken Clezy - Surgeon in Remission

Ken Clezy is a remarkable surgeon from South Australia. His strong faith has taken him around the world, but especially to work for the government in Papua New Guinea for three decades and for the Baptist church in North Yemen. He leads us with his laconic humour through many an adventure. Like Daniel and Joseph, Ken Clezy accepted work for the government of the day while keeping the banner of his faith held high. Clezy became the first Professor of Surgery and later Dean of the infant medical faculty at the University of Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby. After `retirement' Ken and his wife Gwen `set sail' yet again, this time for North Yemen, where he escaped certain death by going home to breakfast before starting his day's work while his colleagues were martyred by a fanatical Islamist not a stone's throw away from his house.
In addition to the extraordinary range of surgical tasks he performed - in variety achieved by few others, and under the most trying of conditions - Clezy devised new treatments to minimise unnecessary surgery of patients, and developed new techniques which he sent to world authorities for comment only to read of these `discoveries' in their own books years later! Despite the depth of his medical stories, the context, the stories and the humour with which he surrounds them will also hold the attention of non-medical readers.
Dr Ken Clezy has been recognised for his work by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, and with national awards from both the Australian and PNG governments. He has now retired back to Adelaide in South Australia aged 80. This extraordinary story makes a fascinating and compelling read.
