Amazon.com Review
Cerynise Kendall's beloved elderly sponsor dies unexpectedly, leaving Cerynise to deal with the woman's heir, Alistair Winthrop. As much as she dislikes Alistair--a difficult man to say the least--even Cerynise hadn't expected him to evict her from her home, which he does without a second thought. Cerynise makes her way to the London docks and finds that fortune has smiled upon her, for a ship captained by a childhood friend, Beau Birmingham, is in port. Beau remembers Cerynise very well and is determined to return her to her uncle's home in the Carolinas. But when Alistair appears and demands that Cerynise be turned over to him as his ward, Beau swiftly arranges a wedding and the two enter into an agreed marriage of convenience. Beau is well aware that he's committed himself to several months of torture, for he wants the lovely Cerynise with a driving passion that threatens to consume him. For Cerynise, the pretend marriage is both heaven and hell. Though she desperately loves Beau, she's sure that his love of the sea leaves no room for a real marriage. Upon reaching Charleston, both Beau and Cerynise believe that they've left trouble far behind, but Alistair is not yet finished with this unsuspecting young woman who stands between him and a fortune. Simmering with passion, The Elusive Flame is classic Woodiwiss. --Lois Faye Dyer

From Publishers Weekly
Romance novelist Woodiwiss's sequel to her perennial bestseller The Flame and the Flower (1972) continues the story of Heather and Brandon Birmingham's son, Beauregard. Set in 1825 England and the Carolinas, it's a bit more politically correct than the earlier book. Notorious for beginning her stories with the rape of the heroine by the hero, Woodiwiss nods to current sensibilities by having the heroine almost raped by the hero, but here Beau is excused because he's feverish and delirious, and also because plucky Cerynise Edlyn Kendall doesn't seem to mind the experience. Beau's a dashing sea captain (as was his sire, Brandon), and Cerynise is an orphan thrown out on the mean London streets by the villain who usurped her guardian's wealth. (Readers will remember that Beau's mother, Heather, was also an orphan thrown out on the London streets.) In standard Woodiwiss form, the hero and heroine, though burning with lust for each other, are separated by willfulness and misunderstanding. Cerynise's pregnancy brings hot hunk Beau to heel, and they wed?an almost mirror image of Brandon and Heather's relationship. A vicious pair of London villains and an equally vicious trio of villains in Charleston add a new twist to the story and allow Woodiwiss to invent a melodramatic climax in a storm-buffeted house. The prose is stilted, the plot hackneyed and both dialogue and settings pay little attention to historical accuracy.

From Booklist
When her guardian dies suddenly, Cerynise Kendall is thrown into the London streets with only the clothes on her back. With the idea of returning home to the Carolinas, Cerynise makes a desperate trip to the docks seeking passage. Her path crosses that of Captain Beau Birmingham, a childhood friend. Beau is stunned to find Cerynise all grown up, and his attraction to her hinders his plan to send her home on another captain's ship. When he realizes that her safety is in jeopardy, he offers a marriage of convenience to protect her reputation, then begins to "court" his new wife. As the two overcome misunderstandings and learn to deal with their intense feelings for each other, enemies from Cerynise's past threaten their future. Woodiwiss set the standard for excellence in romance novels with The Flame and the Flower (1972), which featured Beau's parents, a standard that current authors still try to meet, and fans have waited 25 years for this wonderful sequel. A special paperback edition of The Flame and the Flower is also being released, so expect high demand for both. Melanie Duncan

A good read with a bit too much fluff
By cryssyer
Being a fan of many of Ms. Woodiwiss' novels, I am a bit disappointed in this story. It started out great but then floundered a bit more than half way through when it seemed like every cliche was being brought into the story. It recovered though and the story had a good ending. Overall, itt was just ok. Not like the earlier works that I had come to love. I don't know if I would read it again, like I do the others.

Sweet and gallant
By E.R
Loved Beau and Cerynise. Reading the first two in the series, was really invested in a story for Beau. Cerynise is beautiful, sweet and talented - loved a historical heroine who has a talent - and Beau is similar to his father. Cerynise ends up under Beau's protection just like Beau's mother did with his father. Suspenseful as well a romantic - not a greatly intellectual novel, but well written and enjoyable, an effort made to write in the language and thought- style of the time rather than characters who speak like they live in current times with a few words dropped in to give a pretense of being set in their time.

By Catj1s
Enjoyed the story but seems she couldn't decide whether Beau had Blue or Green eyes, since she made a point of mentioning is blue eyes like his Mother's in the Flame and the Flower. For a couple of chapters Beau had sapphire eyes and in others brilliant green. Cerynise went from green eyes to hazel which would be understand able. I know it sounds trivial but I'm one of those who really notices continuity. Would have enjoyed more story and less graphic sex but that's just me

"Middlemarch" meets "Taming of the Shrew"
By Gio
A tale of two romances: 1) a stern rigid older man marries a young woman just at the moment of her awakening to her own identity, a marriage regarded as a mistake by many of their acquaintances, and 2) two prideful, willful people, both intelligent and morally ambitious, both of whom have been scornful of conventional marriage, struggle against being "in love". And that, dear readers, is all I intend to offer in precis of this book.

But wow! I'm agog! I thought, with all the arrogance of Alexander, that there were no more great 'Victorian' English novels to conquer. I was premature; "The Odd Women" is deep, well-constructed and entertaining, a veritable Platonic Form of the 19th C novel of manners. It's a didactic, reformist novel -- what else? -- but its moral tenor is well incorporated into its character development and its reformism is neither pious nor dogmatic. The subject IS marriage and the liberation of women from patriarchal inanition; George Gissing certainly presented himself as a advocate for "the new woman" of self-reliance and unconventionality. Nonetheless, he was an Englishman of his times, highly sensitive to social class, burdened with assumptions and prejudices of class; he positioned himself at the forefront of progressive opinion, no doubt, but still within the spectrum thereof.

Gissing bears comparison in many ways to the American novelist Henry James. Gissing was 14 years younger than James, though one would not easily guess it from their novels, yet died a decade earlier. James was by far the more adventurous stylist, but Gissing's characters are more flesh-and-blood, more likely to compel a reader's empathy. Gissing is also a plainer story teller, less susceptible to parentheses and adverbial subtleties. The comparison to the late novels of George Eliot, especially "Middlemarch", probably gives a better idea of Gissing's literary manner, but his psychological insights match those of James and Thomas Hardy. Anyway, that's the 'company' he will keep from now on, on my mental bookshelf.

"The Odd Women" is an ambiguous title - deliberately, I think - referring to the demographic imbalance between the sexes in late 19th c England, with half a million more women than men of marriageable age, but slyly also to the blunt truth that the 'liberated' women of the novel would surely have been regarded as "odd" by many. Gissing portrays women very plausibly, and unlike many 19th C novelists, he gives us women of quite distinct individuality. In this book, and in the one other Gissing book I've read, the women are more vital, more appealing, more substantial than the men, but those men are no mere cartoons. They're also flesh-and-bloody, though they tend to be bloody fools. My one previous Gissing novel was "The Nether World", an earlier production, quite interesting but not nearly as well-crafted as "The Odd Women." My thanks to amazoo cagemate Robin Friedman for badgering me to read this unfairly neglected author. Now let's see what other titles by Gissing are in print ...

`I am no tyrant, but I shall rule you for your own good.'
By Jennifer Cameron-Smith
The novel opens in 1872, with Dr Madden and his six daughters living together in a form of domestic harmony which has not prepared the daughters for independent life outside their childhood home.

Alas, this harmony is quickly destroyed. When the need arises for the sisters to earn an income, they face a number of challenges. It is hard for them to reconcile their middle-class respectability and their lack of employment related training with their need to earn income. Marriage is unlikely to be an option for at least two of the sisters because of their relative disadvantage in a society with an oversupply of females relative to males. As the sisters are grappling with this new and harsh reality, an acquaintance of theirs - Rhoda Nunn and her friend Mary Barfoot are assisting women to train for employment. The contrast between the hindrances of the old and the possibilities of the new world for women could not be greater. Are the Madden sisters able to rise to the challenge, and adapt? Is it possible for women to be both married and independent?

I enjoyed this novel for three main reasons. Firstly, the novel explores a number of important class and gender issues in late Victorian culture. Secondly, none of the characters is without flaw. While it is possible to prefer one set of choices over another, no choice is without some cost. Finally, the writing itself guides rather than chides the reader through a story that represents the beginning of an enormous social change - for both men and women.

Excellent creatures, but useful for nothing
By H. Schneider
During the late 19th century, Britain experienced a serious demographic imbalance, when the sex structure of the population had a substantial majority of females. An estimate of 500,000 is mentioned. These `surplus' women were not `pairable' and were called `odd women'. The ambivalence of the word must surely have motivated Gissing to use the word for his title. The novel focuses on the changing role of women in the social fabric.
The `normal' role for women, as defined by the middle class point of view, was the housewife and mother, without education, without income, without own head. A single woman, a working woman, an educated woman was an abnormality. The fate of married women was some kind of lottery as well. Their normal lot was obedience. Divorce was ruled out, property rights were shaped after the male interest, child custody was always with the men in case of breakup of a family.

What happens when there are suddenly thousands of single women who have no provider, no fortune, no training, and no prospects? The novel goes into the sociology and economics of the life of single women, but don't be afraid of a pamphlet. This is a very strong piece of social writing from the late Victorian period. It was published 1892. Gissing was socially conscious, but neither was he a democrat, nor did he honestly sympathize with the fate of the poor classes. At least he was decent enough to reject the term `lower classes', but he didn't seem to realize the contradiction that this produced, as his middle class heroines are just as poor as working class women, and surely just as miserable. His sympathies were with the `de-classed', impoverished middle classes. He had contempt for the uneducated proletarian underdog. He was not in all respects an admirable person.

The novel begins with the introduction of a family with 6 daughters. The father, a widower and a moderately viable provincial medical doctor, dies of an accident without having secured any financial provision for his girls. They have virtually no future other than employment as governesses, companions, shop girls. Marriage, the traditional way, is not a realistic option. Poverty and disease are guaranteed.
The daughters in their helplessness are contrasted with a pair of active, dynamic, independent women, who make a career for themselves and try to help other women. The novel gives us a typology of single women in their attitudes and choices. We also follow different types of marriages and thoughts about marriage.

I find it surprising and disappointing that only about a handful of Gissing's novels are currently in print in decent editions.

Edward S. Curtis: Visions of the First Americans is a tribute to the photographer, his work, but above all to the Native Americans he photographed. Chapters on many different Native American tribes make this collection unique. Edward Curtis's recognizable style, saturated with sepia, is immediately recognizable. He captures not only the striking faces of his subjects, but also a glimpse into the lifestyle of each Native American tribe he photographed. Women grind corn, and communities gather outside their traditional living areas. Atop horses, Native Americans ride on the prarie. Papooses are bundled in woven carrying packs, and men are dressed in full feathered regalia. These images paint a picture, known to us now only as a historical memory. Many tribes are featured in this volume, from the familiar Apache and Navaho to lesser-known tribes. This book will draw in readers who are interested in world cultures, along with photography buffs and historians. This hardcover volume is a wonderful addition to any library.

About the Author
Don Gulbrandsen became a Green Bay Packers fan in the late 1960s when he realized that not only were they the best team around, but they had a running back who shared his name—former Texas Tech star Donny Anderson. This was stunning decision for a young boy growing up in northern Illinois, and whose father was a Chicago Bears fan. Don\u2019s transformation into rabid Packer diehard became complete two decades later when he finally moved to the land of his dreams, Wisconsin. Although the Lindy Infante-coached franchise was struggling mightily at the time, it was great to be living in a place where nearly everyone—man or woman, young or old, black or white—found common ground in their devotion to the Packers. Don relished opportunities to attend games, visit the Packers Hall of Fame, spend Sundays glued to the TV, and while away hours in discussion with friends and coworkers analyzing draft prospects, player injuries, and NFC Central opponents. And when the Ron Wolf/Mike Holmgren/Brett Favre/Reggie White era finally arrived, Don—like all Packer fans—was rewarded for his unwavering confidence in the team. Don has spent two decades as a publishing professional, focused primarily on enthusiast books and magazines covering a wide variety of topics: sports, hunting and fishing, home improvement, transportation, collectibles, and more. He has worked as an editor in both magazine and book publishing and is the author of several books.

A coffee-table book people will pick up
By Pharoah S. Wail
This book includes photographs and/or information on the Apache, Jicarilla, Navajo, Pima, Papago, Qahatika, Mohave, Yuma, Maricopa, Walapai, Havasupai, Yavapai, Teton Sioux, Yanktonai, Assiniboin, Apsaroke, Hidatsa, Mandan, Arikara, Atsina, Piegan, Cheyenne, Arapaho, Yakima, Klickitat, Salishan, Kutenai, Nex Perces, Kwakiutl, Nootka, Haida, Hopi, Hupa, Yurok, Karok, Wiyot, Tolowa, Tututni, Shasta, Achomawi, Klamath, Kato, Wailaki, Yuki, Pomo, Wintun, Maidu, Miwok, Yokuts, Dieguenos, Washo, Tiwa, Keres, Tewa, Zuni, Chipewyan, Cree, Sarsi, Wichita, Cheyenne, Oto, Comanche, Peyote Cult, Nunivak, Eskimos of various bays, islands and capes, as well as others.

I found this book shortly after Christmas of 2007. There may be larger or multi-volume offerings of Edward S. Curtis' photographs, I'm not sure, but this is a very nice one at an affordable price. The background history does not treat him blindly as a hero or villain. It illustrates both his faults and better attributes. The book mentions pictures that are staged, as in the case of Red Dog on page 66. Curtis described the Sioux as living in terrible poverty on the reservation when he photographed them, but one would not know that from the regal photo of Red Dog that clearly points back towards much better times.

The book includes many regions, tribes and ages of people, and in some ways even some of the more negative aspects of his photographs are invaluable because they informed much of the mainstream American (worldwide, really) mythology that surrounds First Nations peoples of North America. The photos are somewhere between documentary and romanticism. Where he could have taken straight documentary photos of poverty and tattered Western/white clothing, he instead staged warrior meetings on horseback and the like. In one sense though, even those seem valuable to me. Not so much as historical data from, say, 1903 when a given photo was taken, but just in the sense that these were the sorts of scenes that the older people in and around these photos would have remembered from their youth.

There are a couple famous faces, such as a lesser-known photo of Red Cloud. You'll also see men who were there at the Battle of the Greasy Grass... er... Little Bighorn.

Curtis' work will always be viewed historically as having good and bad aspects. His work now (even the pay-offs, etc...) is part of American history, and that makes this book important for those of us who can't afford something huge, or whose libraries don't have big collections of the original volumes. One way or the other (and I would guess both), the book will move you.

The paper, binding and cover are all very nice. It feels like a quality book that belies the fact that it's only $20ish for such a big, hardcover book.

I wish there was some way that books like this filtered money back into the communities today. This is by a UK publisher and printed in Hong Kong. At least you can also pick up the fantastic, original "homeland security. Fighting terrorism since 1492" shirts at the westwindworld site where the money does go where you'd like it to go.

The Shadow Catcher Who Sleeps on His Own Breath
By James R. Holland
This is a beautifully printed large-format coffee table book that includes more than 300 Sepia Toned Native American images taken by early 19th Century Pioneer Photographer Edward Sheriff Curtis. The book includes an excellent introduction and helpful picture captions.

The guts of the book are in 20 chapters that match the 20-volume set of books titled "The North American Indian." In this volume, each chapter includes work from each of the original Curtis Series. Most of these pictures are used courtesy of the Library of Congress Collection of Curtis's work.

The Shadow Catcher is the nickname the Native Americans gave the photographer and his camera work. "He Who Sleeps on His breath" was another of the monikers given to Curtis because each night he blew into an inflatable mattress before going to sleep. The nicknames applied to Curtis were typical of the descriptive names of the Native Americans themselves. Many people have at least heard of Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull, Shot in the Hand, Two Moons, Red Cloud, Geronimo and various other famous Native American warriors.

Now most Americans have probably seen some of the most famous photographs that Curtis produced and don't even realize it. Among the most famous images are portraits of Princess Angelina, Red Cloud, Chief Bear's Belly and Chief Red Hawk. Of the scenes are "Canyon De Chelley," (a striking image copied by movie director John Ford among others), "Oasis in the Bad Lands" (which features Chief Red Hawk watering his horse), and "The Vanishing Race."

Based on some of his earliest work photographing Native Americans, Curtis developed a plan. "Before the western Indians and their cultures disappeared completely, somebody needed to reach out to these people, gain their confidence, and record their existence--in words and pictures--before they were gone forever. Curtis believed he was the man to take action in the face of what called a `national tragedy.'"

Curtis decided to make a documentary movie in the Pacific Northwest about the Kwakiutl culture. "The Kwakiutl had a notorious reputation as headhunters and cannibals, " but that didn't frighten Curtis. "Determined to participate in traditional Kwakiutl religious ceremonies, he set out to fulfill the ritualistic requirements of outfitting his boat with a human mummy and skulls. In the process he raided tribal burial islands..."

"It is also possible that he participated in a secret cannibalism ceremony, though even in his old age he would never admit to exactly what happened, adding another layer to the Curtis mystique." One of his fearsome portraits "of a Kwakiutl man, Hamaslahl, wearing a wasp costume representing an inherited crest, was published in Volume X in 1915. It was only one of the wonderful portraits of medicine men and representations of Native American spirits that Curtis documented.

Many of the most interesting pictures for this reviewer included the straightforward pictures of the various types of housing used by the natives. Most people know about Tipis and Igloos but none of the other structures used by various tribes of Native Americans. There are plenty of pictures of the various other huts, lodges and houses on stilts used by Native Americans for centuries.

Over his long and productive life he managed to take 40,000 photos using a large camera format and glass plate 14 X17 inch (and slightly smaller glass plates as time passed) negatives of Native Americans as they were disappearing from the American scene. He also recorded 10,000 Indian songs on wax cylinders, "wrote down vocabularies and pronunciation guides for 75 languages, and transcribed an incalculable number of myths, rituals and religious stories from oral history." He also transferred his music recordings to actual sheet music.

At the same time this reviewer was reading and examining this collection of photographs and their captions, I was also reading and reviewing "Short Nights of the Shadow Catcher" the page-turner biography by Timothy Eagan about the life of Edward S. Curtis. Reading in much greater detail about the problems Curtis experienced getting many of his pictures only makes them that much more meaningful. (Please enjoy my Amazon Review of that title as well as this one).

This is a terrific collection of rare photographs of a vanished way of life.

Stunning Photographs, Mostly Posed
By gotta love the Cretaceous period
This 16 3/4 X 12 inch book with sewn binding and semi-gloss pages with 2 large photos on each page is a great value. At 256 pages, one would think the paper itself would cost more than the book price. Selected from a vast series of photographs Curtis took near the end of America's Westward Expansion, the book includes a biographical account of Curtis himself and a brief description of the American political context in which Curtis made the photographs. This description is insufficient in relaying the impact of all the treaties broken by the American govt. in the course of removing the Indians from their lands and their means of existence. The book points out that Curtis often had to ask his subjects to don their traditional garb for the photograph because by the early 1900s many wore the same clothes as European-Americans. THIS IS NOT A STAND-ALONE BOOK; it provides a rare and rich visual account by a former studio photographer who spent thirty years trying to capture the sympathy of white Americans on behalf of the people they had recently nearly killed off. For that reason, and because Curtis considered himself to be documenting the death of a race, the emphasis is on the past, the "heyday" of Native American cultures. No doubt naivete on Curtis's part, it served well the need of Congress to obliterate the fact that Indians still exist and want justice. Thus the book can also be read as a portrait of good intentions and their insufficiency when they privilege the values of the reigning culture. At least read Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee in conjunction with this book. Within these constraints, the photographs are stunning.
