About the Author
Marcos Placona
Marcos Placona grew up in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and started tinkering with web development when 14.400 kbs modems were the coolest thing. He then started a Computer Science degree, but a better opportunity arose on the other side of the Atlantic. In his 20s, he decided to move to England where he worked as a ColdFusion developer and started blogging at http://www.placona.co.uk.
After acquiring a taste for mobile application development, he has now published over 20 applications for all the major mobile markets, and hopes he will someday see a kid on the train playing one of his games.
Now working as a technical lead for HolstelBookers, he tries to stay on top of its ColdFusion and .Net teams, as well as designing solutions and working with the stakeholders to turn dreams into reality.

Pretty decent start

There are a lot of pluses and a couple minuses to this book. While the minuses are not deal breakers, I'll start with the positive.
This book is simple and compact but gives a straight and to the point review of using Gridster and jQuery to create a drag and drop layout. The examples are easy to follow and I was able to get through all the examples in the book within about an hour. The code in the book is clear and is easy to apply and customize based on the examples. There was nice although brief follow up to each code piece to explain the functions of each feature in the code.
Now for the not as good (still not bad).
It would be nice for the author to talk about browser compatibility and perhaps give some examples of where this type of program could apply. For instance, forget using this in Internet Explorer period. It is 100% HTML5 and I couldn't get it to display from IE10 down. Having said that, drag and drop capabilities of this kind could easily be applied to webkit browsers. Distinguishing the use of this technology would be nice.
My final not so good would be the length of the book. This seemed more like a short web tutorial in it's length. The author was so good at explaining the interactions between the features of jQuery and Gridster that I would have loved to have had more in depth information on each of the topics, especially the methods and callback features of Gridster.
In the end, the book was straight and to the point and I was able to quickly create a drag and drop layout of my own with no trouble at all. If you're wanting a kick start into drag and drop layouts, this is a good start.

Great basic to advanced coverage of drag and drop grids

I gave this a read through from top to bottom, trying out all of the sample code provided. Unlike many technical manuals with samples, this one has code that works without messing with it. The information is laid out from basic and works the examples up to a level of advance scripting but provides plenty of room to tinker. jQuery is a powerful JS engine and this tool that works on top of jQuery will be an asset to anyone looking to be able to move grids around such as in a dynamic content management system. The concepts behind it are pretty straight forward.
This however is not a guide in learning jQuery or javascript for that matter, but you don't have to be familiar withe either to get this code up and working.
This books is targeted at a specific tool and I am giving it 5 stars because its coverage is complete, the code was clear and usable and I think anyone looking to add this functionality would be able to apply it using this book pretty easily.

Helps you get up and running with Drag n Drop

I enjoyed this book, and after reading through it and following the examples, was able to get up and running with Gridster. It was easy to see how I could apply the knowledge learnt in this book to my own projects.
I'd say this book was probably aimed more towards people starting out with jQuery and plugins. It would be good for someone starting out to jump straight into a really fun and useful example of how and what you can achieve with it. The techniques described in terms of debugging and interacting with jQuery plugins could easily be transfer to working with and extending other ones.
I'd have liked the book to be a little longer, and as a previous reviewer mentioned, to go into cross browser considerations. Overall though, a great little read and a fun project to work on.
