Bruce Gervais is a professor of geography at California State University, Sacramento. He holds a B.A. in geography from San Francisco State University and a Ph.D. in geography from the University of California at Los Angeles. Bruce s research focus is paleoclimatology. For his Ph.D. research at UCLA, he studied ancient climates by using tree rings and fossil pollen preserved in lake sediments on the Kola Peninsula in northwestern Russia. He has 12 peer-reviewed research papers detailing his work in Russia and California. Bruce enjoys his free time with his family, climbing mountain peaks, and backpacking on the Pacific Crest Trail."

Indispensable

Luigi Albertini's magnificent history of the origins of World War I ought to be required reading for anyone wishing to debate this fascinating subject intelligently. Enigma (whoever they are) has performed a stellar service in publishing a paperback edition this year. Used copies were going for over $1000.

The three volumes are each over 700 pages, but make for riveting reading. The question of the responsibility for the outbreak of this disastrous war is probably the greatest whodunit in European history. I don't think I'm giving anything away to say that two and a half decades before Fritz Fischer, Albertini fingered the Germans. His evidence, in the end, is overwhelming. (Different responses by England and Russia could have altered the course of events in July, naturally.)

Albertini was an influential Italian newspaper editor and senator until ousted by Mussolini. He observed events in 1914 as a political insider, knew many of the protagonists, and was able to interview a number of them after the war. He had another advantage: by the time he completed the book, the diplomatic papers of each of the combatants had been published in their entirety, the memoirs had been written, the charges and counter-charges issued and disputed, etc. There is naturally more coverage of the Italian role in the crisis than in other studies, but the book is so well written (in Isabella Massey's splendid translation) that even readers not interested in Italy's response to its allies' machinations are likely to find these chapters engrossing.

The re-publication of this book is especially valuable because of the curious persistence of revisionist myths from the 1920s. The idea of collective guilt--that the nations of Europe "slithered into war," in Lloyd George's phrase--is not only attractive to ideologues on both the Left and Right, for various reasons, but continues to appeal to people wishing to think of themselves as compassionate and non-judgmental. Unfortunately, it was not abstractions like imperialism, militarism, nationalism, capitalism, or "secret diplomacy" that were responsible for the conflict, but the decisions of a few individuals in Germany who either wished to wage a preventative war or were willing to risk war to achieve a diplomatic coup.

Albertini does not spare the other parties to the conflict, however. He exposes the incompetence, myopia, and malfeasance in all the European capitals deftly and pitilessly.

Grey, the British Foreign Secretary, and Bethmann Hollweg, the German Chancellor, are sometimes depicted as the tragic figures of the crisis. Albertini will have none of this; he is quite critical of each. Some of the more sympathetic characters are actually the German ambassadors to the Entente countries, particularly Lichnowski in London-humane and civilized men appalled at the instructions they were receiving from Berlin. One of the things the book does so well is to expose the rivalries and animosities within the governments of the countries involved in the crisis.

Though I've not yet had a chance to look at this edition, I'm sure Samuel Williamson's introduction is illuminating.

Excellant History, Terrible Editing

Like other WW I history buffs, I had long searched for Albertini's legendary work. Used copies of the three volume set I found on the net were both incomplete and too expensive. It was with great pleasure that I saw the Enigma Press reissuance of this work offered through the History Book Club for only $45.00. To my great disappointment, the newly released work was riddled with typographical errors of the most disconcerting kind: sentences running together for lack of periods; numbers inserted into words; incorrect spacing withing words and between words in sentences; incomprehensible symbols for times and dates. Every page of this work is riddled with incomprehensible errors. This new and updated version is also an example of false advertising since there is no new information or interpretation of Albertini's research or his own role during the war. Because my search for any usable copy of this book was so extensive and frustrating, I have decided to hold on to this wretched reissuance rather than use it to wrap dead fish.

Get it while you can

This work has been out-of-print too long. It is THE work on the origins of WWI, and a must for the serious bookshelf. I first read this some years ago from the library, and have been searching for it since at reasonable cost -- and here it is.

It's long, it's detailed. But I know of no other book, and there are a number of admirable ones, that provides as complete a picture of this subject. Some examples. Frequently overlooked is the factor of Italy, it's drive for territory in N. Africa, and it's conflict w. Turkey over Greek islands immediately preceding WWI. From this we can see that much of this policy carried over into the inter-war era and was not entirely a creation of Mussolini. Albertini's long-running discussion of Austria's possible drive to the Black Sea, and it's attempts to block Serbia from the Adriatic through Montenegro are enlightening as a backdrop for conditions in the Balkans today. And the recent, and continuing, conflicts in Bosnia, Kosovo, and Serb relations with Montenegro and Albania are all pre-figured here beginning in the 19th century. And then there's the Sanjak of Novibazar -- too much to detail here.

There are few books I could as highly recommend.

The collection opens with a very thoughtful, reflective and instructive general essay by John Cardinal Wright inspired by our brief Pope's infectious sincere smile, and a brief eulogy for the author by Father Angelo Beghetto.

interesting anecdotal memoirs

In 1923 the League of Nations placed Palestine, no longer part of the defeated Ottoman Empire, as a Mandate under British control. The Southern part would become a "national home for the Jewish People" while the Arabs were expected to live side by side with their Jewish neighbors in peace. Both groups were euphoric with the Mandate. In 1948, Palestine was divided into two adversarial nations. Over the next six plus decades, there have been several wars and throughout the ultimate Cold War.

For the past twenty-five years Israeli journalist Hadara Lazar has conducted a series of interviews of those involved when The British Mandate ended in 1948. Fuad Shehadeh is an Arab whose family moved from Jerusalem to Ramallah in 1949. His description of Jerusalem in the last years of the Mandate sets the tone of a stunning series of memoirs as he recalls an upbeat community until the 1948 War that displaced many Arabs. James Livingstone of the British Consul remembers how much changed in 1946 from his previous assignments in Jerusalem as social life was limited to the British community. Meir Dreszner grew up in mixed Haifa while his wife Miriam in mixed Jerusalem. Under the Mandate Meir felt like a foreigner in an Arab restaurant; while Miriam says Jerusalem was a city of separate neighborhoods.

There are many more interesting anecdotal memoirs that provide readers the foundation of what has become entrenched enemies. Readers will appreciate the fascinating look back as Hadara Lazar interviews and obtains the thoughts and memories of numerous Jewish, Arab, and British people who lived in Palestine just after WWII as the Mandate was ending and the Jewish state formed.

I was given the book and as I state in my letter to Hadara I knew I was obligated to read it. This is an obligation that I am now thankful for. The book give the reader an insight that cannot be achieved by an historian. The range of attitudes and emotions that this tiny country evokes makes each interview a discovery. I am a fairly avid reader and this has been one of the most interesting and important books that I have read in the recent past--I highly recommend the book to anyone who would like to better understand why the situation in Israel may never be totally resolved.

I started the 'gift' with a certain amount of apprehension and ended by having trouble putting it down. What I really appreciated was the delicate manner in which you are very present thought out and yet not at all intrusive. Hadara Lazar was born in Haifa and is the author of five novels, as well as non-fiction books that explore life in Israel and the British-Mandate Palestine. Her latest foray, Out of Palestine: The Making of Modern Israel was published by arrangement with the Institute for the Translation of Hebrew Literature and translated by Marsh Pomerantz.

About twenty-five years ago, Lazar began interviewing witnesses and other participants to the events that brought about the 1948 Partition dividing Palestine into two separate hostile nations. As she succinctly sums it up, "The Jews and the Arabs had great dreams, but the carriers of those dreams, the British, woke up first." She further explains that it was a fragile coexistence in a land claimed by two people and yet it seemed that a military solution was not necessarily the only one. Her objective was to deal with this tumultuous period, which still exists today, in her own way and the culmination was Out of Palestine: The Making of Modern Israel "where Jews, Englishmen, and Arabs lived in a historic time and neither wanted to nor could escape its significance."

Her interviewees include Palestinians, Arabs and various political figures from England that played in one way or another a role at the time of the creation of the State of Israel. As she points out in her introduction, she wished to know what people remembered about what had happened at the time the British Mandate was coming to an end and "to find some connections between their words and the myth of those days, to describe how their memories changed with time." These actors would include the British who left, the Arabs who fled or stayed, and the Jews, whom she states she knew first hand, as a native eager to hear their memories. Lazar informs her readers that she had no intention of dealing with this era in any methodical manner. The chapters are constructed according to what ever interested her where some are built around a certain subject or a certain meeting, while others pertaining to an earlier period or a later one. All of these chapters were dictated by the subject, the cast of characters, and the nature of the quest. It should be mentioned, that everything in the book is a direct quote. Lazar states that although she took the liberty of omitting some quotes, she never added to their words. The important element was to find out what people remembered when they confided in her and this the book is one of testimony- a work of remembrance and not history.

Out of Palestine: The Making of Modern Israel is an ambitious endeavor containing testimonies that are replete with some fascinating perspectives and observations tendered by a cross-section of individuals where some are more accurate than others, but nonetheless important in helping us to make some sense of a decisive period in the history of the Middle East. Lazar has succeeded in weaving together an oral history of an era marked by dozens of contentious issues that still exist today.

Among the dozens of participants we meet are Shimon Avidan who headed the German squad of the Palmach and later commanded the Givati Brigade during the War of Independence and concluded his military service as head of military operations,. Khalil Daoudi, who was born in Jerusalem in the family's ancestral home on Mount Zion and who worked for the Mandatory Administration in Jerusalem. Daoudi left his home in 1948 and moved to Brighton, England. Sir Henry Gurney who served as chief secretary of the Mandatory Administration from 1946 until May 14, 1948. Gurney was later murdered in Malaysia in the early Fifties.

One of the shortcomings of this book is that although most of the information contained is engrossing, it is, however, unfortunately capriciously organized. In many instances there was an absence of any kind of separation as to whom Lazar was interviewing causing confusion that forced me to re-read sections to determine if she had moved onto her next participant. Nonetheless, as the promotional material states and I agree, it is an important book for anyone wishing to have a better understanding of the unresolved conflict between the Israelis and the Palestinians.

Very practical fluids engineering guide

Book was well worth the money. Compariable in price to any academic text. I bought it new, which is a reprint of the classic Blevins text. It doesn't come with any dust cover. I was looking for pipe & fitting loss calculations, which it goes over extensively. Serves as a good guide for actual engineering, since it contains a good balance of theory, design guidelines, and applied data from experimentation on most fluid mechanics type problems.

This book is an excellent and exhaustive treatment of the engineering aspects of fluid flow in pipes, through components, and in open channel situations, not to mention nearly every other situation that a mechanical engineer might encounter. As an engineer with fluids and thermal system design experience, I highly recommend this work to anyone in this field. Especially useful are the exhaustive tables of K - values for nearly every imaginable component, including partially open valves, screens, and almost every imaginable type of pipe. This book is well worth the price.

Mostly updates with 18 more chapters

This is simply a revamped Morgan compared to the last one. Mostly everything is in color, more bold points made throughout each chapter, but the same easy to follow layout, and more logically organized. Still missing some of the little things like where the PISS pins are located, and they took out some of the arterial line curves and some other little things that I can't remember during my speed reading of the book that irked me (just adding all the tiny details would have made it a more comprehensive book). Other than that they added a chapter on perioperative management, and a whole section on periop care (mostly reorganized chapters that already existed and added I think about 3 more), separated neurosurgery from people with neurological/psychiatric diseases, and overall added over 200 more pages. It's a good remodel, same good foundation, with some of the new medications and technological advances in the field of anesthesia. Would definitely recommend it, especially for people that like visual stimulation while they are studying.

The text is the foundation for anyone rotating in anesthesiology. Provides adequate information without being too detail oriented. Definately the first text to use for a new resident/rotator.

The book itself is written in a very clear and systematically ordered manner. It is my the book i go to when I have to study a related subject.
