It is amazing to have such a large book but at times it may be a hassle to take but I feel the size is needed to express the beautiful pictures that are in the book. The book is well written so that it does not overwhelm the reader with hard scientific words but it goes into great detail to describe each subject. It is also well organized so it does not just through random information when you reach a new subject of the book, as each subject eases into the next. Anyone who enjoys the subject of space should consider buying this book because it is a joy to read.

Good content, but Kindle edition hard to read

This review is not about the content of the book (which I found excellent in preparation for a trip, once I bought it in paperback) but on the readability of the Kindle edition. Rather than a true e-book, this is an OCR scan of a printed book. As a result, the type often appears broken -- not unlike a third-generation photocopy. While you can change the type size, you are unable to change the actual font. If you are at all sensitive to these sorts of issues when reading, you might consider downloading the sample first and reading the prefaces. I found that extended reading gave me a headache and eye strain. It's not unlike the problem with some mass-market paperbacks in terms of readability.

I rented this book from the local library and appreciate the coverage, the prose, and the author's perspective so much that I bought the book. Who has time for a huge tome when you're just getting started learning about a country? Love the cover, too.

Small steps to achieve radical, positive change

Life in the 21st century is turbulent, and the lessons we all learned in school about how to succeed often do us little good in such a confusing environment. Sometimes, they even backfire. It makes you wonder: is there such thing as a science of success? Are there "best practices," which, if consistently applied, would allow you to achieve results in diverse areas?

Maybe. Just maybe.

In this quick read ebook, author James Villepigue lays out a simple, intuitive roadmap for goal-setting-and-getting. If you're familiar with the works of goal-setting gurus, like Brian Tracy and Tony Robbins, some of the content may seem familiar. But even still... you can never hear this counterintuitive advice enough, and Mr. Villepigue keeps the lessons logical, engaging, and fun.

Some stuff I particularly enjoyed:

* Call to specificity. Too often, we make goals like "I want to be rich" or "I want to marry a supermodel." Not good enough! We need specificity to anchor our focus.
* Practice with "heat." What should we do when our deliberate practice grows humdrum? Just add "heat" -- intentionally spark the Flight or Fight response to make practice more lively and engaged.
* Put goals on PAPER. Mr. Villepigue cites a famous study out of Harvard that found that newly minted grads who wrote down their goals ultimately earned something like 24 times the amount of $ that their peers did. The power of goals-on-paper = amazing. I can attest to that.
* Create and implement a system. Success is a process, not something you "get once." You need to know what works and what doesn't work and to systematically, incrementally improve your life/work game.
* When making goals, make sure they're SMART: i.e. Specific; Measurable; Attainable; Realistic; Tangible and Time Bound.

Yeah, yeah, you may be thinking. I know all that stuff, or at least some of it. Perhaps. But how well are you implementing it? This book can add some "heat" to your self-improvement quest.

A good historic romance anthology

This anthology contains three novellas:

Susan Johnson: As you wish
England, 18th century
The young Earl of Albion is mostly interested in horses, sex and betting - in that order. When he makes a drunken bet to seduce Felicity Belvoid, a virgin from a wealthy noble family, he's in for a surprise: Felicity is quite willing to oblige if he agrees to take her to her aunt in Edinburgh afterwards. As it turns out, her nasty stepmother wants to marry her off to a rich old man. Both are pleased to find out that they really enjoy each other in and out of bed, since Felicity is also a horse lover. But things become difficult when the two are caught and confronted by both sets of parents...
What I liked about this Regency story was the sense of humour. What I didn't like so much was the excess of sex scenes which were sometimes way over the top. A good read, but not great.

Terri Brisbin: A storm of love
Scotland, 11th century
When Breac sees a woman almost beaten to death, he saves her and takes her with him to his home village. As it turns out, Aigneis was divorced and banished by her husband because she didn't give him children. She and Breac soon feel attracted to each other, but Aigneis has a secret she is afraid might drive Breac away...
This is a moving romance with a paranormal element and likeable, convincing characters. It can be read on its own, but is part of the author's Storm-series.

Mary Wine: Stealing the bride
Scotland, 16th century
Hayden Monroe lost his wife and children to a fever. Now he has to marry again but is less than happy with the negotiations for a bride. When a neighbouring laird offers his headstrong sister for a handfasting, he agrees to meet her. While she's insulted at the idea of not being married properly, she soon feels attracted to Hayden. He feels the same. But then she's kidnapped for ransom...
I really liked the characters, especially Hayden who had a lot more depth than usual for male heroes in historic romances. I felt that the story lost a bit of its focus when secondary characters were introruced during the kidnapping. The author obviously plans to write another story about them, but it took away from this story. Apart from that it's really good.

All in all, this is an above average anthology. It's relatively erotic, in Johnson's case maybe too much so, but with well developed characters and in the case of Brisbin and Wine also good plots.

On a different note: I wish this publisher didn't publish so many trade paperbacks instead of smaller paperbacks. They are a lot more expensive and take of much more room on the shelf. I guess they can make more money for the same book. Since it's usually just the trade paperback without a later small paperback publication, you don't have much of a choice if you like an author (in my case Mary Wine), but I'm less than happy with that policy. This doesn't take away from the quality of this book, but it's less than ideal to me.

AS YOU WISH by Susan Johnson

Virgin Felicity Belvoir is well thought of and is able to make even the hardest of heart like her. Men find her irresistible but are too much aware of her to take her virginity. It's a good thing the Earl of Albion isn't as reserved - he plans to take her virginity. And if rumors are true, Felicity is looking forward to every single risqu� moment.

Felicity is a lovely woman. She has style and grace. Her peers love her - she is everything the jaded Earl of Albion needs, even if he is too stubborn to see what is in front of his face. I adore when the intentions of the hero doesn't happen as he planned!

A STORM OF LOVE by Terri Brisbin

Breac is on his way home after searching for a healer to give him herbs to help his dying sister. As he rests for the night, he is awakened by two men throwing a bundle off of a horse. The bundle moves, and Breac is surprised to see a trussed up and very much naked woman inside. Realizing the men mean to kill her, Breac stops them by promising to make her his slave.

Terri Brisbin pleasantly surprised me with A STORM OF LOVE. With drama, flair, and sensuous love scenes, I was unable to do anything other than fall in love with this spirited story. Ms. Brisbin's characters were enchanting!

STEALING THE BRIDE by Mary Wine

Hayden Monroe needs a wife in the worst way. As laird of his clan, Hayden knows his responsibilities. And finding a wife is a priority. Hayden finds the woman he desires in Elspeth Leask. She is a beauty, and Hayden is looking forward to bedding and then wedding this lovely lady.

I am certain that no one other than Mary Wine can tell a Scottish romance with such enticing words. STEALING THE BRIDE has just the right combination of sensuality and sexuality needed to bring Hayden and Elspeth alive.

UNDONE is a great anthology by three extremely talented authors. There is simply no way I could pick a favorite so I am not going to even try. Just know that each story will grab you and keep you warm and toasty as you read. Or, like me, it might make you sweat and shiver with anticipation!

Undone...has done it again.

I LOVE these books where multiple authors give a little story. I call them "teasers", as each one just makes you want to know more of the story, and read more from each author! These tales take you from a first-time lover, to a younger man, older woman scenario, and onto a semi-reluctant bride with a temperamental and picky mind! All three stories touch at least one emotion in every womans heart, and you cant help but be swept away. This is how I became addicted to Susan Johnson, and now I gobble all her stories up! Each tale has it's own sweet ending, and you read each page just waiting for the next exciting line! Truly a great book for quick readers, and those that just want a selection of fast, hot, and heavy, all with a great story line!

Paul Pimsleur� (October 17, 1927–June 22, 1976)�was a scholar in the field of language teaching, testing,�and applied linguistics. He developed the Pimsleur�language learning system, which, along with his many publications, had a significant effect upon theories of�language learning and teaching.

A hearty thanks to the publishers and Pimsleur.com for resurrecting this wonderful book and making it available to the masses via the Kindle. A print copy, if you could find one, could set you back $2400+ up till now.

And a special thanks to Paul Pimsleurs wife, Beverly, and their daughter Julia, for their vision, tenacity, and determination to republish this book. Their selfless commitment to improve the human condition is now plain for all to see.

This book tells you clearly and concisely how to learn a foreign language. I know of no other book or teaching method surpassing this method of learning ... and I've tried about all of them over the past 40 years. Every tactic Pimsleur talks about in this book, I learned on my own --- the hard way. I wish this book had been around when I began learning foreign languages. It would have made my studies a lot easier.

Pimsleur says that our standard approach teaching foreign languages through rote drills is silly. He's right.

I signed up for a French course in community college in 1968. Within a week I was bored and I dropped the course. Why? The instructor began the course by speaking in French never uttering a word in English. That would have been okay if her emphasis had been on engaging the students in short, conversational stimulus responses rather than rote drills of pronouns and vocabulary none of us understood. She violated the number one rule of language teaching: get the students to listen and talk. Instead, she focused on her knowledge and her power over the classroom mindlessly talking at us until we tuned out. This is one of the faulty teaching approaches Pimsleur cites in his book. Sadly, this continues today. I still shudder at the notion of learning French. But this is a psychological condition. My case is a great example -- and I'm sure there are millions of people like me --turned off learning a particular language because of the teaching method and the teacher. My teacher used a method that she was taught to use. She simply didn't know any better.

Everything Pimsleur talks about is essential to know. For example, I learned long ago to parrot the intonation and speaking styles of foreign speakers by listening to the mistakes they make in English. Their overlay of their native language grammatical patterns into English provided me with vital clues on how to learn their language. For example, my wife and I now teach graduate school courses. She received a paper from a student born and raised in Nepal. The student was intelligent and understood the concepts of the technology course we taught. Her grammar was atrocious and her paper a beacon of errors on how to not write a paper in English. I've saved this paper as a great tutor for me -- when I decide to learn her language -- Tibetan I presume.

I learned Russian in college and improved my abilities through a brief foreign-exchange stint in 1970. But the truth is I learned the language through sheer perseverance, strong interest, hard work, and by inventing methods that I now know Pimsleur invented long before then.

Ironic, isn't it? I can learn Russian, a harder language to learn than French, because I created learning methods, all of which, are mentioned in this book. This, is another one of Pimsleur's points.

Later, I learned Greek fluently with no foreign accent. I also learned a dialect of ancient Greek to an elementary level. Why? Strong interest, desire, perseverance, and so on. I married a Greek and when her parents lived-in our home with us we spoke Greek all the time. I bought the Berlitz and Cortina methods at first. After I gained enough "listen and response" skill, I then bought the three volume, 90-tape cassette course from the foreign service language Institute. I could absorb the course easily once I had the basic listen and response ability down pat.

I report this because learning to listen and speak is the best way to learn a language. Learning to do so with short crisp sentences on matters essential to daily living is the key using between 800 to 1500 keywords in any language. This is what Pimsleur champions. I wish I'd known have of him then.

If you want to learn a foreign language, do this:

1) Buy your courses from pimsleur.com and download them in MP3 format and put them on an iPod so you can take with you everywhere.

2) Don't succumb to the temptation to buy or follow another learning method that focuses on reading and writing until you've learned to speak and respond fluently at an elementary level by ear. There's a big difference between learning to speak and respond extemporaneously than there is to reading and writing a foreign language.

3) Watch out for Pimsleur.com "look-alike" vendors. Many of them use Pimsleur's name but add extra words into their brand. They may be authorized resellers. But you'll find they charge a lot more for what you get. For example, unless you need CDs don't buy them. They cost a lot more to produce and ship and the costs are passed on to you. A level I Pimsleur course, new, costs about $119. Don't get misled by "gold, silver, and platinum programs" offered by some sellers. These folks sell CD's in fancy boxes charging you a lot more for fewer of the same programs you could've downloaded as MP3 files.

4) Once you've mastered the listen and respond process, then buy or follow another method to learn to read and write that language. If you reverse this approach, chances are you will not learn to speak and understand fluently. Trust your ear, not your brain.

5) The visual link language method is good as a follow on method ... but has limited offerings. See: [...]

6) Rosetta Stone is the least effective method, but can be useful for learning to write and troubleshoot grammar AFTER you've learned by the listen and response method. Only you can decide whether it's worth the extra money for the redundancy.

I now have the Pimsleur courses for Swedish, Portuguese, Dutch, and 10 other languages. I'm already fluent in Spanish, thanks to Pimsleur. And I'm having a great time with Japanese - it's a lot easier than you think.

Encouragement for every language learner

This book is a true gem for anyone interested in learning a language. Dr Pimsleur takes out the fear factor in learning a language. In the book Dr Pimsleur explains why 90 % of American high school language learners give up the language they pursued in less than 2 years; and why that is such an unnecessary tragedy. Dr Pimsleur breaks down how people learn language best and explains various aspects of language learning, including what kind of teacher/method you should look for.

I personally have gone through the Russian Pimsleur system and can attest it is better than any other language system out there; at least for me and many others. Every Pimsleur website or brochure you read will explain to some degree why the Pimsleur system works. This book goes beyond the brochures to teach the reader how it can be enjoyable to learn language and how one can go about it; with or without the Pimsleur system.

This book is a quick read, with short easy to understand chapters. If you have ever been discouraged by language learning, please read this book. In it Dr Pimsleur admits that there may be people out there who theoretically cannot learn a language, but from his experience any student with some motivation to learn can and should learn a language; for the simple reason that it will be an enjoyable journey with a pleasant reward.

Very practical.

I am reading the Kindle version of this book after doing all four levels of Pimsleur Spanish. I am an American living in Mexico and bought this book because I feel like my language learnings has slowed. Pimsleur gives all kinds of good practical advice, advice that fits well with a person-centered, holistic world view. The book will help you work with your own strengths and desires and will help you to pick a good language learning strategy and modify it as needed. It will also help you pick a good language teacher and language school.

What I am finding fascinating are the instructions for how to record and create your own language drills and exercises similar to what he does in the Pimsleur audio series. I am very excited to try this out.

Great book. I wish I could have kept it but I ended up renting it because it cost to much to buy (200+). Either way the rental price and purchase price is too much.
