Jim Pascucci is an Advanced Roler, NCTMB with over 25 years of experience working with horses. He has spent the last 13 years Rolfing horses all over the world. He is recognized as an authority on Rolfing and Structural Integration of horses. His clients include Grand Prix level Dressage and Jumping horses to million dollar winning Cutting horses. He has been teaching Myofascial Release and Structural Integration for equines for the last 10 years.

I have never read a book that has so much "usable" information as this one. Not only is the text informative but you also have access to On Line articles and videos that gives you additional insight. If your looking to increase your knowledge on Myofascial Release for the equine athlete this book is a Must!

A good effort

Early in the book, the author mentions that one of his biggest challenges is that "it has been challenging to write a book that is useful to professional body therapists who are already working in the field as well as for lay people who want to be able to perform some boy therapy with the horses in their care. OVer the last 10 years, I have students in my classes who are advanced practitioners of some body therapy but not at all familiar with horses. I have also had students who know very little about body therapy but were very knowledgeable about horses."

He's exactly right. In my experience, understanding horses and getting a feel for body therapy can't be taught from a book. The first half of this book attempts to impart a basic understanding of both horses and fascia, which I think isn't possible to do in print. That part of the book was a good effort, but I think people need to get some mileage and training in both areas before jumping into the book.

THAT SAID, if you already have experience with horses and have already done some work with fascia, the second half of the book is VERY valuable. A lot of the time, the techniques that work easily on a human body don't transfer too well to the horse simply because of variations in the horse's structure and the different body mechanics involved. So, in my learning experience, I've often gotten to a specific muscle on a horse and puzzled over the best way to get the tissue moving again. The second half of this book gave me several new tools that work very well. I've incorporated many of the techniques into my existing bodywork toolbox, and I'm very happy with the results. While some of the techniques seem obvious after-the-fact, my creative powers sure weren't enough to come up with them on their own.

So, to sum up, if you are already doing massage/bodywork with horses, the first half of this book may not interest you. But, if you're stuck in certain areas and want some new moves, the second half of the book is valuable.

My horse and I love this book. The author has a gift for presenting theory and practical techniques in a clear, concise, well-organized manner. Anyone, with the intention of wanting to help horses, is able to follow the excellent photos and instructions to achieve this end. Since first reading this book I have studied human massage and bodywork and can attest that there are few instruction manuals of this sort available. The next item on my "desire to learn list" is equine/canine bodywork. After having read and reviewed many related books and DVD's, this book convinced me as to with whom I need to study.

About the Author
"Eric Chaisson." Eric holds a doctorate in astrophysics from Harvard University, where he spent ten years on the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. For five years, Eric was a Senior Scientist and Director of Educational Programs at the Space Telescope Science Institute and Adjunct Professor of Physics at Johns Hopkins University. He then joined Tufts University, where he is now Professor of Physics, Professor of Education, and Director of the Wright Center for Innovative Science Education. He has written nine books on astronomy, which have received such literary awards as the Phi Beta Kappa Prize, two American Institute of Physics Awards, Harvard's Smith-Weld Prize for Literary Merit, and the Walter P. Kistler Book Award. He has published more than 100 scientific papers in professional journals, and has also received Harvard's Bok Prize for original contributions to astrophysics. "Steve McMillan." Steve holds a bachelor's and master's degree in Mathematics from Cambridge University and a doctorate in Astronomy from Harvard University. He held post-doctoral positions at the University of Illinois and Northwestern University, where he continued his research in theoretical astrophysics, star clusters, and numerical modeling. Steve is currently Distinguished Professor of Physics at Drexel University and a frequent visiting researcher at Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study and the University of Tokyo. He has published more than 50 scientific papers in professional journals.

About the Author
Morihei Ueshiba (1883–1969) was the founder of Aikido. At age eighteen, Ueshiba joined the Japanese military, during which time he also developed his skills in the martial arts. He eventually left the military, deeply discouraged by the death and destruction that results from combat. Ueshiba continued to experiment with a variety of martial arts, finding particular joy in the spiritual aspects of martial arts. He came to believe that a real warrior was one who was rooted in love, and it was in this spirit that he began to develop Aikido, a martial art that emphasizes harmony and the peaceful resolution of conflict.

Student of the Cheese Maker!

Okay, I'll admit it. I picked up this little book after watching TWD's characters Morgan and Eastman 'redirect' attacks with their Jo staves like complete badasses. I'll also admit that only a Walking Dead fan would get the title of this review.

I'm fairly certain this is the exact book is used in Season 6, Episode 4 "Here's Not Here" of AMC's The Walking Dead. If you want to see how an Aikido 'master' handles zombies in a post-appocolyptic setting, check out that episode.

This book will not teach you Aikido but imparts the philosophy and wisdom of the founder Morihei Ueshiba. The compact size of the book makes it easy to slip in a pocket and get a daily dose of poetic and inspiring prose when your day allows. Each page has one or two sentences on it that are quick to read but require me to spend time contemplating the deeper meaning.

Great supplement to The Secret Teachings of Aikido also by Ueshiba or even as an Aikido student!

Not What I Was Expecting, But Not Bad

Like so many others I ordered this book because it was featured on The Walking Dead and with it being only a few dollars I decided it was worth buying. It wasn't exactly what I expected but was a good read nonetheless. I don't exactly see how Morgan could get his all life is precious philosophy from only reading this book but it does have a few philosophical phrases that I guess could be interpreted as such. This book is VERY short (I read the whole thing in under an hour) and is basically a collection of quotes and phrases from Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido, and arranged by a student - John Stevens. Many of the pages are only a couple sentences long and some pages are just of Japanese Kanji with the English translations. About 50% of it has to do specifically with Aikido and the other 50% has to do more with just life in genereal. All in all really not a bad book, it just wasn't what I expected. I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone who studies Aikido (I personally haven't, but as a martial artist I do know quite a bit about the art and am fascinated by it) or to anyone who enjoys short little poems about life. Actually, I think most people would benefit from reading this book because I'm sure almost everyone could relate to at least one quote in it. I may check out some of the other books by John Stevens as this has gotten me more interested in the art.

Kindle expanded edition is excellent.

I have the paperback and the small hard cover edition, but like the Kindle edition best. The extra two parts are solid, especially the history of Morihei Ueshiba. The art work is small but nicely incorporated. Good value for about $5. The content is of course classic and needs no comment for those have read even a little of the art of peace.
