This is a thoroughly written manual. Not for the beginner though, which is my fault. The illustrations could also be clearer. Difficult to see detail. But, I'm sure for an experienced car buff, it would be an excellent reference.

Book is an excellent addition for auto-mechanics. From pictures and descriptions, it won't fail you during your repair work. My father only buys these manuals, he's a Licensed Mechanic and NYSCI. When he needs help, he turns here. These manuals aren't for beginners.

PDR, Excellent Source for Medication Data.

It is a PDR. Pages and pages of concise data on 99% of every drug there is. It is a good investment if you need or use the data it contains. It is well organized and thought out. I really like it. It is detailed and completely reliable.

However, if you need information on only a few meds then I'd advising using other resources such as the internet (at places you can find on Google) and save your money.

Arden Shakespeare Hamlet

I am currently working on my MFA/Directing. I directed Hamlet and am now writing my defense of it. I have two thoughts on this third edition.

After going through this edition, from a point of view of the script, I'm not sure I understand the need to update Harold Jenkins's 2d edition. The script itself was easier to navigate in the 2d edition and I thought Jenkins's notes were more helpful. I also disagree with some of what Thompson and Taylor have to say in their editorial notes below the script. That said, I am biased because I used the 2d edition as a sort of "Hamlet Bible" as I directed the piece. Jenkins's notes were extremely insightful and useful. I became very comfortable with it.

On the other hand, this third edition has some different insight into the play in performance than does the second edition, as well as information on casting and music that was not included in Jenkins. Obviously there is much written about William Shakespeare in the world, and this 3rd edition of Arden is probably the most up-to-date resource for bibliographic material (as well as some photos of past productions of the play). Jenkins edition is 24 years old, ancient in the scholastic world's "what's new" when it comes to sifting the vast quantity of material written on Shakespeare and Hamlet.

Obviously, the needs of the theatrical world for playing Hamlet are different than that of the scholastic world (of which I am currently stuck in both). I think Jenkins is more user-friendly for the theatrician while Thompson & Taylor suit the needs of the scholastic better. My final thought is that a scholar/student of Shakespeare will want to have both the second and third editions for the differences they have to offer.

Middle aged and finally able to read Shakespeare

I cannot more highly recommend this particular book, No Fear Shakespeare's Hamlet.

I am approaching 50 years old and my only real experience trying to read Shakespeare was in high school where we were assigned roles in class and made to read, without comprehension, Romeo and Juliet and Julius Cesar. In the interim, I tried watching a few plays and dragged my kids to see the play Taming of the Shrew, which they hated because they couldn't understand the language nor the plot. Rather than becoming a Shakespeare hater, I've always felt inadequate and dumb for this huge hole in my education.

My current inspiration to try Shakespeare again was my desire to try and help my high school aged son become more educated and cultured than I have been.

I tried first with the Folger annotated editions of Shakespeare. They look excellent and define the unfamiliar words, but I still could not make sense of a substantial portion of the dialogue. I guess maybe I'm just dumb, I don't know.

Anyway, I saw good reviews about this No Fear series, and I ordered several. So far I have read the modern English translations of Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello, King Lear, and The Tempest. While I feel a bit like I'm 'cheating', I actually have really enjoyed all the plays and at least now I know the plots and the characters and even some of the more subtle themes. I can't answer the complaints that the translations don't adequately translate Shakespeare's meanings. There are a few side notes that point out double meanings and things like that, though there are not extensive footnotes or sidenotes.

To answer those who rate these books one or two stars, my answer is that they are at least a door into the world of Shakespeare for those of us unable to navigate the originals on our own. And they only take a couple of hours to read. It's not like this is a lifetime commitment or anything. The book only costs five bucks, so why not invest a couple of hours and read it? And, for me, I liked the plays so much that I AM now going to dig out the Folger editions and read the originals, with the No Fear books available in case I get in trouble. These modalities of trying to appreciate Shakespeare are not mutually exclusive.

Well, hopefully that's helpful to someone. I wanted to write this so that people would know that these books are not just for lazy students hoping to avoid reading the originals or somehow 'cheat' in their English classes. I'm not a Shakespeare scholar or teacher and never will be, just an ordinary guy, but for me, these books were the window of opportunity that I had been searching for. Two thumbs up, most definitely.

Best Shakespeare Edition Available: Arden

The Arden editions of Shakespeare are the best available. While they cost a lot more than the standard cheap editions, they have so much more. The Folger editions (probably the most widely available editions of Shakespeare) have footnotes that are quite general and never do they have enough. In addition, they really don't have that much extra information on the play--only a small essay analyzing the modern issues of the play. The Arden editions are truly the scholarly editions of Shakespeare. Ninety percent of the time that I have a question on the text, a footnote provides more information. In addition, a lengthy introduction is included. Everything is documented. While at this point I don't care that much about how the quarto version of Hamlet said "no", when the folio version said "so", it's nice to know that if I have a specific question, the answers in there. My thoughts on Hamlet: Don't fret about understanding the material, just dive in. Shakespeare offers interesting plots to the beginners and vivid prose to pick over to the advanced scholar.

Ugh. Well, I guess the title worked. ...

Ugh. Well, I guess the title worked. I picked it and read it because of the title and blurb, ooh, a lesbian version of a really sexy book, let me try it. I kept waiting for it to pick up and get interesting or sexy or anything, but it never happened. The plot was thin, the characters were flat and the sex wasn't hot. And why was it called fifty shades, when BDSM was such a major part of that series, and only a sidebar in this one? Way to cash in on someone else's success.

Piggybacking at best

I received a free copy of 50 Shades Of Pink by KT Grant on Netgalley in exchange for my honest review. I was not compensated for my review and I am not required to give a positive review. The opinions are expressed are my own.
I am a huge fan of the Fifty Shades Of Grey series so I was looking forward to reading something similar and getting that same sort of vibe. With that said, this book just lacks a richness and sort of finesse in the way the story is told plus it could use some editing. The main characters name is Lindsay Pinke which is pronounced Pink, the e is silent. Lindsay is naive in a bad way. Her boss at Virago Magazine sends to do an interview with Victoria Nox for an upcoming article. When Lindsay arrives at the interview she is completely flustered and intimidated by Nox. Nox freely admits that she did a background check on her and that freaks Lindsay out. Lindsay bolts from Nox's office. It actually says "I didn’t run but I bolted down the hall and toward the door that would lead me to freedom." She was so disturbed by the interview that she goes home, climbs in bed and refuses to answer her phone or talk to anyone. I'm a sucker for kink, romance, drama and stupidity to a certain point but this story is just bad.

I was a bit skeptical about this book that I received from NetGalley to give an honest review. All in all though I thoroughly enjoyed it. Had to overlook the grammatical errors but, if you can I guess turn your cheek to it, you'll be fine. I have to say though some parts I was wanting, and needing more in depth look into Victoria's past or I guess explanations about her ex Laci. I'm a girl who likes to know why, what, when, and where. I was biting at the bit when I started to notice that the pages were slimming down and I really didn't want it to end especially since I wanted to know what the big "deal" was between Victoria and Ben. I hope I don't have to wait too long for the sequel. Back to practicing the art of patience.

This a good introductory book to cupping in the context of Chinese Meridians but does not get into details. The graphics are not of high quality and too schematic. A good starting point for those interested in cupping.

Good book, except for the tab of Darlin Cory

I think the book captures each song good enough, with correct tab for at least one solo to each tune. A few elements are missing from some of them (with Doc's styles it is always so much going on that those fine details are easy to leave out or miss).

The tabs are not easy, even if it may seem so at first look. You will need some experience on playing the clawhammer style if you are to master the arrangements.
I also recommend trying to learn his substitution for the drop-thumb, because Doc Watson uses it whenever possible. It is important if you really want to learn his style.

The 'usual drop-thumb' technique I am refering to here is:
striking one string and then follow with the thumb on either string above, except the 5th string.

He instead uses multiple ways of 'off-string pull-offs' upwards :

(Example): Strike the first string and immediately add a pull-off on one of the above strings, even if it is fretted. The old book 'Songs of Doc Watson' has short tune section on the banjo where this can be seen in the tabs, although there's no clear description there.

The difference between the drop-thumb and Doc Watson style is excellently illustrated in the tune "Ramblin' Hobo" which is given first in a regular drop-thumb arr. and then in the correct variant.

Froggie went a Courtin' (from Essential... , same as the 'Home Again!' album version) is captured great, (also one of the three banjo tunes in 'Songs of Doc Watson')

Shady Grove (finally the banjo solo in print! , and correct too, although some more ideas in it could have been added, because there's lot going on there, but still it is great).

Merle Watson's clawhammer style is represented nicely on Cuckoo Bird.

Now to the downsides: While the tab for Darlin' Cory is correct melody- and stylewise, I don't know why the author has placed it in Double-C-tuning, when Doc clearly plays in open-D (graveyard tuning f#Df#AD) on the Legacy record , which he or his brother also played on the Folkways LP 'Watson Family' (now on the Smithsonian CD).
As in 'Country Blues' he gets a modal sound through this tuning (On 'Country Blues' the banjo was tuned a half or a whole step down).
The author maybe has another recorded source for Darlin Cory I don't know of, but open-D it is for the Legacy version. It also sounds better.

Otherwise, the tab is simple enough to read, (if you don't use the iPad or likewise you can view it on your computer).
No printing available at the moment.

The only other good lesson for his style that I have found is Mike Seeger's Homespun Video ' Oldtime Banjo Styles '(rel 1994) where there is an excellent segment of Doc Watson at Merlefest 1991 teaching quite many tunes and his different styles.

Is this the best format?

I'm sure this is good tab and all, and the price is right. But I have the font size in my Kindle bumped up considerably, and I still can't make the tab out. Wouldn't it be possible to format the tab in landscape so it could be larger and fit on the page?

Tabs are good but difficult to practice from

The tabs in this ebook are well written, but they are difficult to play becsuse the pages are not printable. This is not a unique problem to Kindle books, however. I'll spend more time looking for banjo tabs in PDF format or other printable formats before I buy more ebook tablature.

I was a disaster with needle and thread before reading this, and although this book is not a "how-to" for sewing, it does cover some basics. I recently got my first sewing machine and have been happy enough with the first three things I made (all from this book) that I gave them away as gifts (well liked!). That's a huge step forward!

The only thing I wish was different? Some of the creatures don't have patterns, you're supposed to free-hand draw them yourself. It takes some practice to get the size right to account for seam allowances, but it's not bad. That's why plush toys are so great.... there is a lot of room for imperfection. :) That said, if you're going to write a book, and include patterns, why not go all the way and include them for everything?

Otherwise, I love this book! I would also recommend Softies: Simple Instructions for 25 Plush Pals if you like fun and whimsical creatures.

Great and Fun book

I was so excited to get this book, and fortunately, was not disappointed when I did! I love the pictures, the instructions are easy, and considering I had no previous experience sewing or creature creating, it's easy to follow! I found this book through Jenny Harada's site, which I stumbled on quite by accident while searching through all things cute, and decided to give it a try! I wasn't pleased with ALL of the plushies detailed in the book, but the majority are winners. Definitely get this book if you're interested in getting started, or just being able to flip through it from time to time!

Fun with sewing

Imaginative and adventurous sewing, great projects to share with family ( mother/daughter projects). Quirky enough for preteens/teens and environmentally friendly, several projects are made with recycled clothing and/or materials. Anyone with a sense of humor would love one of these projects as a gift. The templates and ideas keep you thinking and planning more sewing projects. Great idea!!!!
