About the Author

The Hon. Aubrey Nigel Henry Molyneux Herbert (1880-1923) was the second son of Henry Herbert, 4th Earl of Carnarvon. He worked for two years as a diplomat, four years as an officer in the Irish Guards during World War I and for twelve years he was the Conservative Member of Parliament for South Somerset and Yeovil. Herbert and his wife, Mary, had four children. His daughter, Laura, married the novelist, Evelyn Waugh.�

Jason Tomes is a Lecturer in British History at Boston University. His previous publications include King Zog: Self-Made Monarch of Albania and Balfour and Foreign Policy.

Bejtullah Destani is a British-Albanian scholar and founder of the Centre for Albanian Studies in London, of which he is the Director. He is the editor of numerous books about the history and politics of Albania.

Should She Forgive His Lies????

This story had me laughing in the very first chapter. Violets lame boyfriend breaks up with her which leads to a series of awful things happening to her that just get more funny as the day progresses. Both Violet and her mother say the most embarrassing and mortifying things when they get nervous and it is hilarious!

This is the story of a gorgeous guy named Zane who can have any girl he wants who meets his future step sister and can't seem to stay away from her. Violet is pretty too, but she has self confidence issues that keep her from seeing how beautiful she really is since she was fat as a child with daddy issues and wonders if all boys cheat. Falling for Gorgeous man-whore Zane could be a big mistake! The goddesses he traipse through his place while she temporarily lives there make Violet seem way out of his league or his "type". But she falls for his charming ways and loses her heart. Unfortunately, he has secrets and they really could break that heart.

Chapter 10 hilarious moment:
The next night I walk in on Zane just coming out of the shower. He's wearing nothing but a towel knotted low around his waist. Beads of water slide down his tanned muscles, from his chest down to the fascinating rides along his hips....
Don't worry, I handle it well. I scream, "Ewwww!" and run from the room.
No, I really did. I walked into that room and saw the hottest sexiest guy I've ever seen - wet and half naked. And I said, "E[...]"
I know. How am I still single, right?

I love Violet's personality and all her embarrassing moments. I do not like all the cheating that has gone on (dad cheats on her mother, boyfriend cheats on her, best friend cheats with a married man...) and I found myself agreeing with Ms. Helize and Violet's own instincts, that Zane is going to break her heart. The story had some really sweet moments, a lot of deception and EXCELLENT embarrassing moments that had me wiping my eyes. I love this author's style and would read another book from her.

There are references to sex, sexual situations, naked girls and some profanity. Like most self published books, there are definite editing issues.

I was expecting more and what I got was an okay YA novel.

I really wanted to love this book. I had high expectations for it, maybe too high. With the title I was thinking it was a more in depth, emotional read. I wasn't expecting it to be a pretty clich� storyline by the end of the novel, especially with the title of the book I wasn't expecting more.

Violet is a funny (she made me laugh out loud on several occasions) 17 year-old girl. She is just your average girl, which I loved that she wasn't the outcast OR the popular girl, she was just normal. Violet's mom is marrying a man she just met two months prior who has a gorgeous 20 year-old son Zane. Zane is a player, having a different girl in his bed every night and tons of money to blow. Violet can't help but be attracted to him and the feelings become mutual. The two have a steamy secretive romance not wanting their parents to know they are together even though they are about to be step brother & sister. Zane and Violet begin to get series but Zane is keeping a gigantic secret from her and once Violet finds out everything changes.

What I liked: I really liked that the story was humorous. I wasn't expecting to actually laugh out loud at more than a few scenes. I liked the character of Zane, he was mysterious but sexy. He was rich and a player but he was a nice laid back kind of guy. The book started off really strong, in fact I would have given the first 70% a 4 star review. Though it is a little too YA for me, they had a PG-13 relationship and found it realistic of a high school senior girl.

What I didn't like: I wasn't a fan of Violet, she was a bit immature. Zane once mentioned he thought she was mature for her age but I found the opposite, especially towards the end of the novel. Zane's secret... first I have to give props to the author because I totally did not see what the secret was coming. I was shocked but disappointed. I was hoping it was something more in depth serious. I do not want to say too much and spoil it for you readers but the secret was totally out of the blue with no clues at all of what it was. When his secret was revealed that is when the book went to a 3 star rating. I just kept thinking "For real? No way! You've got to be kidding me?" I just didn't like that the story became totally impossible at this point.

It's a cute YA read. It wasn't bad just not great and the ending left me very disappointed. I enjoyed the humor in the book but overall it was just okay.

I give Falling For The Ghost of You 3 Stars.

You gotta read this story

I loved loved loved this book. It was humorous, sexy, witty and romantic. Our Hero (Zane) had a secret that I figured out pretty quick. Something happens to the heroine's BFF and we are supposed to wonder "who did it?", except once again I guessed correct, BUT that's okay because if I wanted a mystery I'd be reading mystery novels. No, this book is good because of the way the story is executed. Violet and Zane go from strangers to friends to something more. The chemistry and sexual tension between them keeps them company during the whole transition. Violet is absolutely hilarious, adorable, caring, loyal, smart and playboy model gorgeous - Zane didn't stand a chance. He is described as Brad Pitt level gorgeous. He is the whole package (melt panties kind). If you are into graphic detailed love scenes this book is going to be a let down. I would describe the love scenes as heated moments that fade to black. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I would have preferred jealousy scenes where Zane was battling with jealousy; not bat crazy jealous fits, just something that gave him insight on how Violet felt when chics flirted with him. Other than that I am so glad I bought the book. It was well worth it.

Driving the hulking trucks, she obtained an insider's perspective on the complex kinships, arcane rules, and obscure lingo unique to the realm of sanitation workers.

Nagle chronicles New York City's 400-year struggle with trash, and traces the city's waste-management efforts from a time when filth overwhelmed the streets to the far more rigorous practices of today, when the Big Apple is as clean as it's ever been.

Open the lid; it's a good trashy read...

It's difficult for anyone to imagine a good book about trash... call it refuse, rubbish or garbage, whatever you might like. However, sometimes one can be quite surprised, even as a New Yorker.

Author Robin Nagle's Picking Up is about the DSNY, the City of New York's Department of Sanitation, and it's an interesting and sometimes fascinating book. As the subtitle "On the Streets and Behind the Trucks with the Sanitation Workers of New York City" suggests, this one takes you down to the road level where the trash bags, garbage cans and dumpsters exist, waiting their scheduled pickup.

Ms. Nagle teaches anthropology at New York University, and has been anthropologist-in-residence at the DSNY since 2006. After reading this book, it isn't hard to be a bit more grateful of the efforts of the men and women who clean up after us, regardless of where you live. These unsung heroes are essential to us, unless you're one of those who has to take your own trash to a municipal dump or some such suburban facility.

As one reads the pages of this work, it becomes amazing to realize that Manhattan Island itself has historically been extended into both the Hudson and East Rivers by building on its own trash. The author does an excellent job of covering the role of the long history of sanitation and its workers in the Borough of New York, going from such topics as 17th-centuryNew Amsterdam's ban on scavenging pigs to Street Commissioner George E. Waring Jr.'s spotless White Wings cleaning crews at the turn of the 20th century. The author also looks at the command breakdown that tarnished the reputation of the DSNY after the 2010 blizzard.

She reveals that the DSNY has its own fascinating jargon: "getting banged" is undergoing corrective disciplinary measures and "disco rice" refers to maggots. The term "mongo" refers to objects salvaged by sanitation workers from the trash, and can be used as either a noun or as a verb. In addition, sanitation workers should be referred to as "san men" and not as "garbage men."

We are reminded that sanitation workers have a higher on-the-job death rate than any other uniformed department in the city, firefighters and police officers and firefighters included. They have one of the 10 deadliest jobs in America, due to traffic accidents and exposure to toxic waste, yet their responsibilities are not at all as respected, much less admired. She quotes a sanitation worker: "You can go your whole life without ever having to call a cop. And you can also go your whole life without ever calling a fireman. But you need a sanitation worker every single day."

Ms. Nagle's book is not just to make us more aware of sanitation workers. She reminds us that they are New York's Most Essential. She writes: "Sanitation is the most important uniformed force on the street."

Picking Up is the result not just of Ms. Nagle's years researching the New York Department of Sanitation, but of a deeply-rooted preoccupation with trash that dates back to her own childhood. She has taken a topic that many of us would pass on, thinking that it would be boring or perhaps even disgusting, but instead we find a book that reads like a novel. Open it and you'll find (and pardon the pun) that it's a good trashy read.

Who Knew??

As a child, I remember watching a "Sesame Street" segment about garbage disposal. It began with a banana peel being tossed in a garbage chute, and ended with a barge chugging out of a harbor with a sing-songy jingle reciting, "Goodbye, garbage!" I was always troubled by that segment - notwithstanding the obviously absurd implication that garbage dumped in the ocean ceases to exist, I also felt that there must be more - a LOT more - to the story. Years later, I sometimes observed rumbling garbage trucks and wondered about their mission and the people who carried it out.

Enter Dr. Robin Nagle, anthropologist, professor, and sanitation worker. "Picking Up" is a moving, gritty, and sometimes laugh-out-loud-funny meditation on sanitation in the modern world. Nagle considers sanitation workers the single most important uniformed force in New York City, and after recovering from the audacity of such an idea, I had to acknowledge its plausibility. Her descriptions of New York BEFORE modern sanitation opened my eyes to blessings I never realized I had. I used to think of the City as grimy, even dirty, but compared to the ankle-deep filth and rampant disease of earlier times, I now recognize its astonishing cleanliness.

This is one of the most literate books I have ever read. Nagle tips her hat to at least half-a-dozen literary works, from Dante's "Inferno" to Douglas Adams's "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy". That, the exhaustive end notes, and the occasional word that sent me to a dictionary ("peristaltic"??), engendered a deep respect for the author's scholarship. I am relatively well-read, with an above-average education, but Nagle's prose led me to intellectual depths I never even knew were there.

I felt that "Picking Up" is about so much more than just garbage and sanitation workers. This is a book linked to universal human experience, through the basic life functions essential to one of today's most vibrant and challenging urban centers.

talking trash

I am one of those people who put out a Christmas gift for the garbage collectors in my suburban neighborhood (in Central NY). I have always had an appreciation for the people who haul away our refuse. I knew it was a tough, thankless, dangerous job & this book confirms my belief that wtihout trash collectors we would all be up to our necks in crappola. Rare is the writer who literally jumps into the job to be able to report the inside perspective that only BEing there can provide. Amazing to me that women do this job. I know -- but I am older & come from a different generation even tho I too worked a rather physical job when I was younger. It's brutal & wears you out even on the best days. The writing here is smooth, well researched, & nicely balances historical information & current issues.It is informative w/o being dull & covers a wide range of topics.Probably doesn't go into the "politics" of the biz enough but do we really want to be dragged down with too much of that?? Nah. Tell us the nitty-gritty true life on the streets stories of the men & women who keep NYC functioning w/ little or no thanks for their non-stop efforts in all seasons & under all weather conditions. As much as the author covered in this book I'll just bet she's got another book worth of great stories that she could share with us. And you can learn a lot from the footnotes & glossary! Nicely done. It's lovely to enjoy a non-fiction book that reads like a novel. She cared enough to get it right.

Looking for THE best book to help plan a hike on the Pacific Crest Trail? Curious of how to go about organizing your hike, and wish you could just sit down around a campfire to pick the brains of successful thru hikers from prior years? Then GET THIS BOOK.

Yogi has been compiling data on the Pacific Crest Trail for quite a few years. With her excellent organizational skills, and the help of many hikers taking detailed records, she has written the most detailed and helpful guide imaginable. Everything you need to hit the trail as prepared as possible is in these pages, and all subjects are covered. Gear lists, water sources, resupply strategies, trail tips and an extensive town guide will help you make wise decisions and greatly increase your odds of having an enjoyable experience on the PCT.

I've hiked the entire PCT twice, and carried Yogi's information on both trips from Mexico to Canada. I'm headed out for a third thru hike this year, and am stoked to have yet another copy of Yogi's book. And this year, the book is even BETTER! Section hikers, thru hikers and day hikers alike will all benefit from the data in Yogi's Handbook, and I cannot endorse this book enough.

A Valuable Tool for Media Literacy and Critical Analysis

This text provides Insightful approaches to critical discourse analysis, using contemporary examples from various media. I plan to use this for my undergraduate course in discourse analysis. The writing works well with the intent of the text, which is to engage students in thinking about the sea of media we continue to navigate in our daily lives.

excellent introduction to quantum structures

i read this book and it seems to be very readable. it explains the physics behind the quantum heterostructures in a lucid and tractable manner. i recommend this volume before reading the treatise by weisbach & vinter. those who want to start research on quantum structures will find this book as an invaluable resource. its comprehensive and almost exhaustive.
