In 1991, Cyan began work on Myst, a project that would expand the world of computer entertainment. The goal was to use what they had learned building the successful worlds for children, to create a whole new world for everyone. I highly recommend these novels to those that have played any or ...

To preface, this book is definitely one that I've had some familiarity with.

The premise of the three books dives into the history of the D'ni people, Atrus' ancestors. Atrus, being the creator of the island of Myst from the game of the same name.

Through the novels you see the personal stories of three characters that were important to Atrus' history, whether directly or indirectly. You learn about the Art, which allowed them to "create" worlds, and about the fall of D'ni.

I highly recommend these novels to those that have played any or all of the Myst games, as it adds important back-story with interesting plot devices all wrapped in an imaginative world that encourages seeing the "whole" of things. Every time I read it I'm inspired to write again! Definitely a must-read!

Great series

This is a great series of books.

The series certainly is easier to understand if you have played the book series but it is not a prerequisite. They do a good job of fleshing out the world and painting a picture of what the charecters are like.

If you are going to read this series I, STRONGLY, recommend that you read it in chronological order. That is The Book of Ti'ana followed by The Book of Atrus and finishing with The Book of D'ni.

C'mon guys, please make The Book of Marrim, I am begging you!!

I loved the Book of Atrus

Long-time Myst fan here. I loved the Book of Atrus. I liked the Book of Ti'ana. But I quickly grew frustrated and then bored with the Book of D'ni. This last book in the trilogy suffers from one-dimensional characters, bizarre pacing, and a narrative that grows increasingly convoluted. I'm glad I read it and finished the trilogy, but I probably won't revisit the Book of D'ni if I go back to reread any of the Myst Reader.

I hear a fourth book called The Book of Marrim is stuck on a back-burner somewhere. I really hope that gets published and will hopefully give the titular character the airtime she was robbed of in Book of D'ni.

Despite my irritation with the Book of D'ni, I thoroughly enjoyed the Myst Reader. It's excellent backstory to the games and (for the most part) an enjoyable read in its own right.

A must have Book for getting started with Chef

Cloud Computing has grown incredibly in the last years, and having a powerful tool like Chef that automates configuration, provisioning and deployment has become a must.

Chef Essentials is targeted to both beginners and more experienced users and helps you to quickly get started with Chef.

It starts with the basic concepts in the first chapters and then delves into Chef internals explaining its architecture and how you can deal with recipes and how to develop and test your own recipes to achieve your goals.

One thing beginners will particularly appreciate are the examples on how to use Chef with two real and popular cloud providers, namely Amazon EC2 and Rackspace.

But perhaps the most interesting part is the chapter that teaches how to setup your application environment to automate its deployment on a cloud infrastructure like Amazon EC2.

The final part of the book explains some advanced topics like working with data bags and writing custom extensions.

To sum up, this is a nice book to read if you are interested in learning Chef and how to use it in real scenarios to automate your tasks in a cloud environment.

there will not be a great deal of hand holding in this area

You will benifit most from Chef Essentials if you already know Ruby. As it turns out, Chef is very Ruby centric, and there is not a lot John Ewart could do to get around this. Because the manuscript is written to assist those learning Chef, not Ruby particularly, there will not be a great deal of hand holding in this area. That is not to say Ewart does not do a good job explaining Ruby structures when needed. This is all that may be needed if you have some passing experience with any coding language. Rather, these explanations will be more intuitively grasped, and learning to implement Chef in a production environment will certainly be many times easier for those already experienced with the language.

Chef is certainly a tool I plan to return to, once I do find more free time. I plan to first freshen up on Ruby and RVM though, and I may dabble into Puppet for a bit of compare and contrast. I’m certainly more interested in this topic now, and once I get my install going, I’ll have some really good excercises to go through ;)

Quick and simple howto book for Chef

This book provides you with all the required processes and notions to create your own chef environment from scratch. Every step is detailed with a short explanation so you are never completely lost(there is a lot of ruby involved so if you never used the language, the book will look a little more complex).Keep in mind that most of the books code is on the author github but in multiple repos so you will have to jump around a bit to get all the required files for the demos. If you never used a configuration management tool this book is a very good starting point to begin using a central repository instead of doing manual edit/setup in your datacenter.

Great Reference & Educational Book

Very well written book. Great reference manual for those working in oil & gas and great learning tool for those who want to get into it. It's amazing how many people in oil & gas just want to understand by going to a facility (really there isn't a whole lot to see other than a wellhead, separator, a tank, and maybe a dehy). You really want to understand the principles first and the "why". This book does it.
