About the Author
Gene A. Davis received his doctorate in organic chemistry from the University of Chicago (1968). He worked as an industrial research chemist, senior scientist, R and D director, and consultant for 30 years, and he has authored 28 publications and patents. He has taught general, organic, and clinical chemistry, as well as biochemistry, at the University of Massachusetts (Lowell) and several other colleges and universities. His book exemplifies his unique and effective teaching approach to organic chemistry.

Great Overview of Organic Chemistry

"Organic Chemistry made ridiculously simple" is a great supplementary text. Its emphasis on first principles helps to establish a solid starting point for any organic chemistry student. It is direct and easy to understand with great diagrams, many examples, and occasional humor that help to introduce and emphasize various basic organic concepts. This emphasis on basic and core concepts helps to set up an intuitive foundation for branching out to other more complex subject areas. I would recommend this book in addition to the standard course text for any student and perhaps especially for a student who may be struggling a bit with this subject.

I recommend this book as a straight forward outline of organic chemistry. It is an excellent supplement to use during an organic chemistry course.

* There isn't a lot of extra information, but it is complete

* It is organized along the lines of a standard organic textbook

* There seems to be a good mix of regular organic chemistry and biological applications

* I found it very easy to find what I was looking for

Excellent supplemental and review text.

I found this book very helpful if one needs a quick review of Org Chem. I have not taken any Org Chem courses since 1971 so at first I was totally lost. But when I used this text as a supplement to a Org Chem textbook like Morrison & Boyd's (my old 1971 copy!) the stuff made sense.

I suspect that this is a "test oriented" book for med students but I found it as an excellent supplemental text. If you are currently taking a Org Chem course then this book will definitely help. If you have been out of the loop for a while don't expect this book alone to get you up to speed.

About the Author
Dr Yoon received his Ph.D. degree from Kansas State University. He has taught courses on Quantitative Analysis, Operations Management, Quality Management, and Statistics. His research areas include Strategic Decision Analysis, Quality Management (Six Sigma), and Fuzzy Set Applications on Operations Management. Recently, he is working on user friendly translation of statistical principles. Dr Yoon has published 30+ scholarly journal publications and three books, including the prestigious Sage Quantitative Applications in Social Sciences Series #104: Multiple Attribute Decision Making. Dr Yoon spent one year as Visiting Research Associate Professor at Kansas State University. He has been a consultant to HTX International, HESI ,PSE&G and many more. They present several methods which encompass the major classes of MADM models. These include the Dominance method, Maximin, Maximax, Conjunctive method, Disjunctive method, Lexicographic method, Elimination by Aspect, Simple Additive Weighting, Weighted Product, TOPSIS, ELECTRE, Median Ranking Method, and AHP. In this entertaining biography of song parodist and comedian Allan Sherman, who wrote and sang the iconic hit “Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah!,” Cohen shows that Sherman was the Adam Sandler, Jerry Seinfeld, and Weird Al Yankovic of 1963. The account details Sherman’s childhood, his comedy breakthrough, his struggle to adjust to fame, and his decline and untimely death at 48 in 1973. The opening section, covering Sherman’s family and childhood, is slow going, but Cohen hits his stride when he tackles Sherman’s comedy career, offering insightful and witty analysis of the song lyrics and explaining how his subject’s comedy impacted all strata of American society (it didn’t hurt, Cohen notes, that JFK was a fan). Things I Didn't Even Know!

In full disclosure, I am the subject's daughter, but there were lots of things I didn't know about Dad, especially from the time he graduated college until the first album came out. But then I was young. In any case, I tried to read the book as an outsider looking in and I couldn't put it down. I was familiar with the trainwreck of his childhood, but reading it in black and white makes it seem totally unbelievable -- and yet it happened. Cohen did a great job of capturing dad's childlike happiness and his great sense of twisting the English language to one's advantage.

FOR SHERMANIACS ONLY!

Disclosure: I've been a fierce fan of Allan Sherman since his debut a half-century ago. Now, author Mark Cohen has finally given this gifted- and troubled- comic genius his due with a serious, scholarly biography. You'll learn how he created those brilliant, often Jewish-accented song parodies here, along with a bunch of previously unpublished lyrics ("Seventy-Six Sol Cohens", anyone?). There's one catch, though, and it's a big one: if you don't know Sherman's work, you may not appreciate this book. But if you're of a certain age and still sing things like "Harvey and Sheila", "Glory, Glory, Harry Lewis", and "Shine On, Harvey Bloom" occasionally- as I have since age 6, when he was hotter than a pot of chicken soup- you are going to love this. In his own twisted musical way, he was the Jerry Seinfeld of the '60s. Highly recommended, but for Sherman fanatics only!

A must-read for Swinging Livers

If you grew up listening to Allan Sherman's great records like I did, you will be fascinated by Mark Cohen's scholarly, yet readable, biography. Sherman's life was tragic, fraught with childhood trauma and adult excesses. Cohen renders his narrative into a clear-eyed tale that neither excuses nor demonizes this troubled artist. I came away from the book with a much greater understanding and appreciation for Allan Sherman - and for the talents of Mark Cohen.

About the Author
Susanna Lee’s thoughtful revision of the footnotes for the Second Edition, expanding detailed references to historical figures and nineteenth-century French locales, will greatly assist students in understanding this complicated novel. She is Associate Professor of French at Georgetown University. She is the author of A World Abandoned by God: Narrative and Secularism, and has written numerous articles on nineteenth-century narrative literature, the history of ideas, and American crime fiction.

Robert M. Adams was Professor of English (Emeritus) at the University of California at Los Angeles. He was the author of many books, including Ikon: John Milton and the Modern Critics; Strains of Discord; Proteus, His Lies, His Truth: Discussion of Literary Translation; The Land and Literature of England; and Shakespeare―The Four Romances. In addition to the Norton Critical Edition of Utopia (he was translator and editor of the First and Second Editions), Professor Adams was editor of five other Norton Critical Editions, including The Prince by Machiavelli, Candide by Voltaire, and The Praise of Folly and Other Writings by Erasmus, the texts of which he also translated. He was a founding editor of The Norton Anthology of English Literature.

my favorite book, so it should be yours too

This is a nice edition of the Red and the Black. It's compact and yet includes a number of additional materials including short historical and biographical sections, penetrating critical essays, and some excerpts from Stendhal's book on love and the autobiographical Life of Henri Brulard. I found the essays by Auerbach and Girard to be particularly good. Girard provides helpful historical/political context in his discussions of social psychology. His analysis, while being in accord with the tenor of Stendhal's own analyses, introduces a powerful terminology capable of addressing primary issues more explicitly. It's too bad that so much of his work remains untranslated. I think the essays are the real advantage of this edition. That said, I liked the translation, but I did not check it against the French or any other translations. It was clear and unencumbered by flowery or abstruse diction. My only point of comparison is the Oxford edition translated by Catherine Slater, which seems to match up well to the French. But this was some time ago. I couldn't really say if one was better than the other.

A colourful tale...

Stendhal's Le Rouge et le Noir (The Red and the Black) is a classic novel that was very important to me in early formation of directions in life. I found I could identify quite strongly with Julien Sorel, who wanted a better life, a life of meaning and importance, and was torn about which direction in which to go.

The Red (symbolising the church, the scarlet of cardinal's robes) and the Black (symbolising the military, the uniform, etc.) were both options held out to me early; in fact, I rejected both for a while, but have found myself drawn back in the red direction.

The story is one of coming of age as a bookish fellow in a working-class family, then ambition (but not overpowering ambition; in fact, Julien's father wishes he had more), then shifting careers (rare in an era and country where one's path is usually set for life early; however, this was the post-revolution era in France, in which some things were giving way, some more than others, it seems). Julien is pulled by events rather than being the director and creator of realities; Julien finds he loves the affect of various roles in life (more than the substance and responsibilities that come with such roles) -- for instance, he loves the swagger and the horsey-ness of being a soldier, but doesn't particularly like to get dirty or have to fight. He likes the trappings of religious office, but isn't inclined so much to spirituality, and Julien ran up against this in seminary:

The seminary director said to Julien: `Truth is austere, sir. But our task in this world is austere, too, is it not? You must take care to guard your conscience carefully from this weakness: Excess of feeling for vain exterior charm.'

There is love, a love triangle in fact, romance and thwarted desires, and loves fulfilled, if not completely. It ends with a dramatic homicidal act, trial, an execution, and a most bizarre funeral. The melodramatic performance of Mathilde (re-enacting an earlier story with which she was familiar in which the heroine carried the severed head of her lover to his grave) provided the most animated conversation among ministers and psychologists I have ever witnessed.

Stendhal often built a character's name out of words that were descriptive, which is sometimes lost in translation as the names often don't get translated in the same way, or may have lost the immediacy of their meanings over time. Julien may be a play on Julian the Apostate, enemy of Christianity; Abbe Castanede is decidedly Spanish and inquisitional; Noiroud and Moirod come from words meaning swarthy and mottled; many other examples abound.

This is a very hard book to encapsulate in such a small space. It is not easy reading, but it is rewarding reading.

And again, an interior dialogue of Julien in seminary helps inform me, and keeps me thinking (both for and against in many ways):

`In the seminary, there's a way of eating a boiled egg which declares how far one has progressed down the saintly path....What will I be doing all my life? he asked himself; I'll be selling the faithful a seat in heaven. How will that seat be made visible to them? by the difference between my exterior and that of a layman.'

Stendahl is not to blame for editing vexations

I bought Norton's second edition of The Red and the Black because a translation by another publisher was clearly flawed—flaws detectable even by one who hasn't studied French. I was greatly disappointed when I began to find mistakes even in Norton's Introduction, which gave wrong page numbers for citations in the text.

The phrase may have gained a rare scientific currency in 1865 with the studies of James Maxwell, but not until Einstein's theories swept through the scientific world in the advancing years of the twentieth century did the common man or writer start speaking of "the speed of light.”

Someone should have weeded out such a blatant anachronism—surely not in Stendahl's French prose.

And by the way, never read an Introduction of any book if it's your first reading: Pretend it's an Afterword, and save it for when you complete reading. You'll have a much better chance to weigh your own critical perceptions without being biased by someone else's.
