The Very Best

The Very Best beginner's book on JavaScript, for adults (and children). Don't be fooled by the title about kids. This is solid for anyone at any age.
It shows clearly how JavaScript is laid out from the ABCs of the language. I went through several books. This is the best. Most books are confusing to beginners even if you know HTML and CSS. The reason being that the writers know too much code and cannot put themselves on a pee wee level to teach it. Hence if you are not advanced somewhat, those books merely add to your confusion and lack of understanding. This starts at the very bottom.

As far as this being for kids. That I think is true if such kids have programmer parents or are geniuses in their own right. Otherwise this book is really for adults who are studying JavaScript on their own and need a tutorial which begins at the very start of JavaScript development and gradually moves upwards. And yes, this is for dummies like myself who are adults.

Worth looking for

I enjoyed this mystery. Like the previous reviewer mentioned, there is a nice twist at the end. I understand the book is out of print. It was published in 1980, and the dialog is somewhat dated. One character says "you're trying to freak me out"! But I liked the main characters, and there aren't many curse words. Try it, you'll like it!

Fun Mystery

This was a fun read. It was a good mystery, keeping you guessing to the end, and Thompson has an entertaining style, including little anecdotes and jokes along the way. He write mysteries for people who like puzzles. I'm looking forward to reading more by him.

This is the new edition of the first version published in 1980 and still an entertaining read.
The setting is a bit old, and could maybe do with a new updated version, but it was such a sweet old-school who-dun-it that I loved it for its oldtime quirkiness.

New ways to get nutrition packed foods on the table

I really do love this cookbook. I don't need to be on a low oxalate diet, but the recipes were interesting and delicious looking. I'm always eager to try new recipes that have fresh, whole food ingredients and are quick to make. These foods are packed with nutrition and good for anybody regardless of if you need to reduce oxalates or not. Several of the recipes are now going to be regulars on my meal planning list, and I absolutely love the slow cooker ones.
Only 2 things I'd bring attention to is the fact that some recipes are not so child friendly, at least not with my picky eater, and you really need to like cabbage because there are several cabbage recipes. I love cabbage, so it's not a problem at all for me, and now I know more ways to bring it to the table. :)

This book has enhanced my performance in HTML and CSS design beyond what I thought I was capable of, and I haven't even owned the book for long. I am using it for my classes at DeVry, and I'm also creating my own little set up of websites just for fun. Making tables, embedding audio and video, and so much more is so much fun with this book. I hope that these books keep getting published as HTML and CSS evolves as it looks like loosing touch with the newer versions could create issues with coding. Thanks for the amazing book Professor Mavrody. :D

About the Author
Biography: PERCIVAL ALFRED YEOMANS or "P.A" as he became known to all, changed Australian agriculture and the thinking and methods of the agricultural community. He was born in Harden N.S.W. in 1905, eldest son of a family of four. In 1928 he married Rita Irene May Barnes, also of Harden. They had three children; Neville in 1928, Allan in 1931 and Ken in 1947. Rita Yeomans died in 1964. Death duties forced the sale of the two original Keyline properties near Sydney. In 1966, "P. A" married Jane Radek. They had two daughters, Julie and Wendy. He designed and built equipment to deeply loosen soil without bringing up the subsoil. This equipment was the first rigid tyned vibrating sub-soil cultivating ripper for use with farm tractors. It is many times more efficient than a chisel plow, and is able to loosen more soil to a greater depth using less tractor power. The Prince Philip Design Award officially recognised the breakthrough success of this equipment in 1974 when P. A. Yeomans Pty Ltd received this coveted award for the Bunyip Slipper Imp with Shakaerator. P. A. Yeomans devoted much of his latter life time to consulting, advising and lecturing on Keyline planning for which he has received requests from many parts of the world. P. A. Yeomans passed away, aged 79 years, in November 1984. Biography - KEN B. YEOMANS H.D.A.. Ken was born in Sydney, as the youngest son of P. A. Yeomans. Ken graduated from Hawkesbury Agricultural College, Richmond N.S.W. in 1969 with a Hawkesbury Diploma of Agriculture (H.D.A.). Ken Yeomans was a foundation member of the Agricultural Technologists of Australasia and is a member of the Irrigation Association of Australia and the Biological Farmers of Australia. Ken has a consulting practice in property design and development in S-E Queensland. His services include the site selection, survey and plan preparation of earthworks for large farm dams and Keyline gravity irrigation systems as well as assessing and making recommendations on; rebuilding the living fertility of soil, grazing management, cultivation practices, cropping programs and subdivision design. Throughout the states of Australia and overseas, for clients with land holdings ranging in size from under four hectares to over four hundred thousand hectares, Ken Yeomans has applied his knowledge and experience of Keyline on family farms, multiple occupancy communities and rural holdings of large corporations.

The Classic Keyline design book

Water For Every Farm is a compilation of other books written by PA Yeomans starting in the 1950's. The information presented is not outdated, and applies today. This book is invaluable to any landowner, farmer, or rancher that has ever struggled with periods of drought, or just would like more water available for their farm enterprises.

It's an awesome concept, however

I found it very difficult to understand at first. It would've been helpful to have more detailed pictures explaining the main features you need to know to understand Keyline. I also found there to be a lot of repetitive information. Maybe this will be an easier read for someone who isn't a visual learner. It's an awesome concept, however, and will benefit anyone who wants to improve the land around them. It's just not the most interesting read to get through.

About the Author
Gill Rapley, the pioneering champion of baby-led weaning, worked as a public health nurse for over twenty years and has also been a midwife, lactation consultant, and voluntary breastfeeding counselor. She is currently pursuing a PhD in infant feeding.

Everything the Original Baby Led Weaning Book Should've Been

I was already well into the BLW process when we bought this book, but as an avid BLW evangelist, I had to have it anyway, for the lending library, at the very least.

I wish I could take my original BLW book back and get just this one instead. The first several chapters are, in essence, a re-hashing of the original BLW book, but explained in a much simpler way, laid out more nicely, and with visual aids (charts, graphs, and -- of course -- completely adorable pictures of babies). It does offer some nice bullet-pointed lists absent from the original book that are tremendously useful -- things like "What to Expect," "Keeping Mealtimes Safe," "Common Allergens," and the like, as well as charts of relevant feeding skills by age. Also, this book offers nice long lists of actual suggestions of a variety of first and second foods, which the original book did not.

Truthfully, it just looks nicer and reads more easily than the original book.

As for the recipe section, I think it's quite useful. I'm a fairly good cook and menu planner, and part of the point of going the BLW route was so that the baby could quickly transition to eating basically what we (the adults) were eating. However, I know that I found myself befuddled after having the baby in how to suddenly cook as a Mom. In the old days, I could spend all afternoon preparing complex and leisurely meals... the transition to quick, one-pot cookery was not a graceful (or particularly tasty) one for me, and trying to develop meals based on how quickly I could eat them with only one free hand was tricky, to say the least. It took me several months to really find my rhythm in the kitchen again, and I suspect this cookbook might've helped. Simple, nutritious, cross-cultural recipes that are written lightly, as loose frameworks and templates so the cook can tweak as needed... it's a simple, inspiration-stirring bunch of dishes.

The recipes are not ethnocentric -- Thai, Japanese, Moroccan, British, American, French, and Italian recipes are all represented. As, for us, part of the appeal of BLW was raising a child who enjoyed a wide variety of flavors and ingredients, it's great to see that inclusiveness represented.

I appreciated the book's quiet support of long-term breastfeeding, though formula-feeding parents need not fear... the book's language and message is applicable to anyone who fed their baby on cue from the beginning, regardless of whether they were on the breast or the bottle.

Get this instead of the original baby led weaning book

If you are considering purchasing the original baby-led weaning book, don't. After reading it, I told people it was useful but too long - it could be condensed into a pamphlet. Well, the beginning of this book is just that. It's a great summary of the first book and all you need for baby-led weaning.

I was at first disappointed in the recipes. For breakfast, they have recipes for oatmeal and french toast. Do those really require recipes? But as I read more, I was pleased to see so many different cultures represented. So far we've tried the oatmeal fingers (equal parts milk or water with oats, microwaved, and cut into spears), the bubble and squeak (for St. Patty's Day), and the Japanese Rice Balls (stuffed with cucumber and avocado).

As a vegetarian, I wish it had more veggie friendly main dishes, but there is a small section. I also have some concerns about some of the ingredients like soy, milk, and eggs. These are all foods I have read in other resources to avoid, but they're used over and over in these recipes. I have chosen to wait on these foods for my little guy, so will also have to wait on many of the recipes.

Overall a good book that gave me many ideas for what to cook that we can all enjoy.

Buy this instead of the BLW book!

After borrowing the original "Baby Led Weaning" book and the previous edition of the cookbook from the library, I can confidently say that this cookbook is better and more useful than the BLW book. The first 40 pages of the cookbook cover thoroughly why baby led weaning is a good idea and basic tips. Really, any more than that (as in the BLW book) gets repetitive and dull. Then this cookbook has over 100 pages of recipes.

I like the recipes. The authors are British, and the recipes reflect a broad variety of tastes. Tonight we had "Fish Cakes" (pg 111) for dinner, which my husband declared to be surprisingly good for coming from a baby cookbook. My eight month old had a blast. I like that the recipes are written for "1 adult and 1 baby" or "2 adults and 1 baby" to be convenient for small families. I'm sure larger families could just double the recipes. The book is also pleasingly designed overall, but it would have been nice to have pictures of the food.

Just so you know, I'm not a baby led weaning die hard. My daughter eats jarred baby food at daycare, but we are trying baby led weaning at home for dinners and weekends. This book has helped me have more confidence about what and how I feed my daughter. I highly recommend it!
