Richard Rennie, BSc, MSc, PhD has conducted research at the Universities of Aberdeen, Oxford, Cambridge, and California, Santa Barbara. His main interest is in the theory of the structure of matter. He has written a number of articles and reviews. He has contributed to several reference books including the Oxford Dictionary of Physics and the Oxford Dictionary of Chemistry. He wrote the Facts on File Dictionary of Atomic and Nuclear Physics which was published in 2003. Math Applied to Biology

*Chance in Biology* is one of the best science books I have ever read (and I have read quite a few of them). This book applies probability theory (along with other topics in math and physics) to biological phenomena. A big PLUS for this book is that the authors intentionally wrote the book to be accessible to an educated but nonspecialized audience.
I really enjoyed the authors' discussion of random walks applied to 'genetic drift' (the likelihood that offsprings' genomes will be different than their parents') and a surprising application of probability theory to elastic materials found in nature.
I also enjoyed their chapter on the probability of extreme phenomena -- which is an obviously useful topic that gets short shrift in many probability and statistics books I have seen. They even use baseball statistics in that chapter!
Another interesting part of this book was the discussion and the practice problems dealing with Bayes' Theorem. The concepts discussed in this book is something that all health care officials and lawyers should familiarize themselves with.
Some caveats about the book:
(a) The reader should be familiar with the 1st year of college calculus. While it is is possible that someone with only an understanding of algebra can get a lot out of the book, the calculus would help. I should note that you do not need to know a lot of calculus and someone who is 'mathophobic' could still get a lot out of the book.
(b) This book does not deal too much with inferential statistics. This book focuses in on probability, which is the cornerstone of statistics. However, when it does touch upon inferential statistics, it does a superb job.
(c) I wish the authors spent a little bit of time going over Markov Chains (random walks is a type of Markov Chain and the book does deal with that but without talking about MC explicitly). But that is a minor complaint.
Rounding out my praise for this book is the fact that most of the chapters have practice problems and ALL of the problems have solutions to them at the back of the book. I can't even begin to tell you how great having all of the solutions for all of the problems is for self-study/comprehension. The problems provided are no 'toy problems' either ... they are actually extremely helpful in not only testing one's grasps of the materials but also in illuminating and extending the points made in the particular chapter.
Other miscellanous positive things about *Chance in Biology*:
- a sample MATLAB program to simulate random phenomenon (in the solution to one of the practice problems)
- a chapter that deals with 'noise' .... interesting for those interested in Chaos
- authors make an excellent distinction between non-deterministic random/stochastic phenomena vs. deterministic Chaos
- many more good things!!!
Bottom-line: If you are at all interested in probability, applied math, physics, chemistry, or biology, you should buy this book.

Biology illuminated by physics

Biology progressed from natural history to its great depth and breadth in part from the inclusion of truly quantitative ideas from math, physics, and chemistry. The mantle of greatest expositor of these ideas in recent times may have passed from Stephen Vogel (his excellent books are well worth reading) to Mark Denny. Here, with Steven Gaines, he takes us into extreme events, the limits of our ability to hear and to see, the elasticity of spider silk, and more. The math is demanding, but it should be; Denny and Gaines make no bones about it, but reward the reader. Denny's book, Air and Water, is equally a pleasure to read.

Middle of the book was lots of fun--

The first two chapters didn't catch my interest and I almost set the book down for another choice, but glad I did not. The middle of the book was lots of fun and yes, it did have a feminist overtone which I found interesting and educational. I never stopped to realize how hard female writers had it during the "good old days." Sadly though, the last two chapters or so ended up being anticlimactic--sort of ended with a whimper instead of a bang.

Very clever, cosy, and great fun

What a delight! This is a Gothic romance on at least three levels. It's like being invited to an intimate tea party with Ms Mertz (Ms Michaels' real name) together with a select group of literary types who love Jane Austen and the Bronte sisters and enjoy Ms Michaels' work, at which tea party she shares her trade secrets, explains her love for the genre and plays a clever parlour game with her guests.
At the most basic level, in the book the heroine is an English literature academic who discovers an unpublished manuscript of a Gothic romance written round about the beginning of the 18th century. Chunks of painfully but authentically purple prose are conjured up by Ms Michaels for our delectation, in the approved Gothic romance style, complete with a decrepit ancestral mansion, heroine in psychological distress and physical danger, a Deadly Family Secret, and two male protagonists either of whom could be the hero or the villain. More than a story, there is a real mystery as to who the writer is and how her novel related to real events.
Meanwhile, the heroine, while demonstrating the art of researching a gothic novel and expounding on the genre (e.g. as representing women's oppression and powerlessness in a male dominated world), is herself trapped in one. She is in physical danger, she has just escaped a suffocating marriage and is still ensure of precisely how she wishes to operate in a male dominated world, and she has to work out which of two men is the hero and which is the villain. There's even a Family Secret lurking. This is the level which usually constitutes a Barbara M, and this is handled with above average dexterity - snappy scenes, real characters and good pace. Cleverly, the characters are put through a classic Gothic plot even as they analyse Gothic and other plots; and Ms Michaels milks this shamelessly and delightfully. For instance: "Whatever his motives, he was trying hard, and humility wasn't easy for a man of his arrogance. Or was pride a more accurate word? Karen smothered a smile. Bill's pride and her prejudice against him - another classic plot!" The reader can't help but smile.
Finally, this book is a game with the reader, in which Ms Michaels cames clean with her agenda and issues a challenge. I quote: "She had almost finished two-thirds of it now, and her familiarity with the conventions of the Gothic novel had inspired several hunches - educated guesses rather - as to how the book would end. In one sense she hoped she was right, for that would prove how clever she was; in another sense she hoped [the author] would prove cleverer than she, scorning the old Gothic traditions in favour of a more original solution." She has brilliantly articulated the reader's dilemma of wanting to best the author, and yet hoping the author is cleverer. A protagonist says : "[The author] has set up the plot, and unless she cheats by introducing a new character or a vital clue at the last minute, an intelligent reader ought to be able to predict what will happen." Too true. Ms Michaels' plot resolutions usually seem obvious on hindsight, but they are seldom obvious when you are in the middle of them. For the record, I lost this game. I guessed the wrong hero because I was prejudiced by one man's resemblance to a prominent hero of Elizabeth Peters' (another Ms Mertz pseudonym) and assumed she would not go against her own grain. I should know better than to underestimate Ms Mertz and think that she would be bound by her own conventions. Congratulations, Ms Mertz, and thanks for the fun, and the peep into your world.

Not an update!

Be forewarned, this "updated" edition is not updated. I mistakenly assumed the author would have added coverage of AES, which became the standard after DES was defeated, given the recent (2015) issue date. WRONG. This is just an expensive repackaging of the same old 1996 volume I already had in paperback. If you have the older version already, learn from my mistake. You don't need this. If, however, you don't have a copy and you work with cryptography, or need a good reference on older tech, you might want it. It is NOT "current" as the description claims, however; not by any measure. Wanna buy a used paperback version? :-)

Required Reading

If you are interested in, working in, purchasing certifications, or doing anything real in cyber security you must read this book. One of the cornerstones of information security is knowing how cryptography works and how it is applied. Bruce Schneier writes all of his books with the reader in mind. He is technical when he needs to be and practical the rest of the time. Yes, this information isn't required for any certification and you won't get any kudos for having this information on your resume, yet this is intended for those of us who are professionals in our jobs.

If you have never read any of Mr. Schneier's work, start with any of his other outstanding books first. This publication is not meant for the causal reader. This book is in-depth, detailed, and built for those who are serious about their profession. Bruce takes extremely complex subjects and breaks them down into digestible chunks for those non-mathematicians such as myself. I missed those physics and quantum mechanics classes in college but Mr. Schneier eases the reader into the wild world of modern day cryptography (with a splash of history).

It isn't a book that you can read just once. This document needs to sit near your desk for ready access. If you work with AES, PKI, SSL, or any other cyber security field that has lots of initials in it, you should consider whether or not you want to continue pretending to know everything or are you ready to start your real education.

If you buy this book, you better have a highlighter and a pen to take notes. You will enjoy this materiel, unless you don't understand it. If you don't have dog-eared pages, just buy some "Knuckelheads Guide to Security" and call it a day. This book should make you squirm in your seat. It doesn't have a happy ending but neither does our profession.

Buy it, read it, read it again, and use what you have read. Trust me.

Good resource, a bit outdated and incomplete

I've used this book as a resource for teaching and for my own personal learning. Bruce Schneier is an incredible leader in the field, and he is know for his explanations that makes difficult concepts easy to grasp.

That said, this book is a bit out of date if you are interested in studying any of the currently used technologies. Also, there is some errata that can confuse people not familiar with the topics already. Finally, some topics contain incomplete discussions.

I would love to see an updated version of this book!

Disappointed!!!!!

Not a bad story line but it has several mistakes. First, there are multiple grammatical errors that leaves one wondering if te writer even bothered to review the story before publishing it. Second, while at the church Sebastian secures Kendra's hads with a belt, secures them above her head, and then proceeds to remove her dress by pulling off her shoulders and down her hips. I may be wrong, but I believe that is impossible if her hands are secure there woukd be no way to remove her sleeves. Third, and last but not least...at some point in the story, Sebastian tells Kendra that his parents were married 50 years before his mother passed. Kendra later meets his father who was aged but not elderly. Two things wrong with this. First, unless Sebastians parents married when they were 10 years old, his father would be at least 70-80 years old...doubt he would still be working as a cop or sheriff. But posible, I guess. Second, the writer had Sebastian take Kendra to a church he had gone to often when he was young, a church he came upon at age 10 after running from his father's funeral after he commited suicide. A dead man coming back to life...that miracle was not described in the story line. I am very disappointed that I waste money on this 'book' if thats what you can call it and will never buy from this writer again.

Where's the editor?

I know we're not seeking literary classics, but BASIC editing and fact checking would be nice... I got as far as the backward time change before I tossed it down the first time. Then grammar had me doubting the writer's native tongue (p.s. If English is their second or newly acquired language, great effort- otherwise, shame). And- if you're going to go to all the effort of placing the story in Spain, dig a little deeper than a couple of Si's and a gracias- you get that on a sign at Taco Bell.

Quick read.

Are there no editors left in this world? Lots of errors in the writing. But you still get the idea. I don't know why it's 4 books in reality it's one short novel. The story line was rushed more about (thrust) than sex or romance. Not really worth the money I have read better books for free.
