jeff once again took up a topic that has been misunderstood and clarified it`s history
and potential benefits.
as he has done previously with his china book he makes the case for a clear eyed look at the benefits.
this book reads like a detective story; hard to put down.
leads the reader to an understanding of the role marijuana can play in medicine.
should be required reading for anyone interested in modern medicine.

Wonderful book!!!!!

Mr. Friedland wrote a well thought out and well researched book addressing the history of defaming one of the most valuable plants on earth. He does a wonderful job of positioning cannabis in the context of history, and why there is certain misinformation with lawmakers, health care providers and citizens. We should all thank Mr. Friedland for shining a light on the history and potential for this much confused plant.

Informative, easy to read and, unlike many other books about marijuana, provides a comprehensive historical, medical and legal background of the plant. A good guide for prospective cultivators and those who are just curious about the plant, its benefits and downsides. I most enjoyed the historical facts and how marijuana grew to become one of the most undeservedly hated flowers. Highly recommend.

About the Author

Marcos Placona

Marcos Placona grew up in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and started tinkering with web development when 14.400 kbs modems were the coolest thing. He then started a Computer Science degree, but a better opportunity arose on the other side of the Atlantic. In his 20s, he decided to move to England where he worked as a ColdFusion developer and started blogging at http://www.placona.co.uk.

After acquiring a taste for mobile application development, he has now published over 20 applications for all the major mobile markets, and hopes he will someday see a kid on the train playing one of his games.

Now working as a technical lead for HolstelBookers, he tries to stay on top of its ColdFusion and .Net teams, as well as designing solutions and working with the stakeholders to turn dreams into reality.

Pretty decent start

There are a lot of pluses and a couple minuses to this book. While the minuses are not deal breakers, I'll start with the positive.

This book is simple and compact but gives a straight and to the point review of using Gridster and jQuery to create a drag and drop layout. The examples are easy to follow and I was able to get through all the examples in the book within about an hour. The code in the book is clear and is easy to apply and customize based on the examples. There was nice although brief follow up to each code piece to explain the functions of each feature in the code.

Now for the not as good (still not bad).

It would be nice for the author to talk about browser compatibility and perhaps give some examples of where this type of program could apply. For instance, forget using this in Internet Explorer period. It is 100% HTML5 and I couldn't get it to display from IE10 down. Having said that, drag and drop capabilities of this kind could easily be applied to webkit browsers. Distinguishing the use of this technology would be nice.

My final not so good would be the length of the book. This seemed more like a short web tutorial in it's length. The author was so good at explaining the interactions between the features of jQuery and Gridster that I would have loved to have had more in depth information on each of the topics, especially the methods and callback features of Gridster.

In the end, the book was straight and to the point and I was able to quickly create a drag and drop layout of my own with no trouble at all. If you're wanting a kick start into drag and drop layouts, this is a good start.

Great basic to advanced coverage of drag and drop grids

I gave this a read through from top to bottom, trying out all of the sample code provided. Unlike many technical manuals with samples, this one has code that works without messing with it. The information is laid out from basic and works the examples up to a level of advance scripting but provides plenty of room to tinker. jQuery is a powerful JS engine and this tool that works on top of jQuery will be an asset to anyone looking to be able to move grids around such as in a dynamic content management system. The concepts behind it are pretty straight forward.

This however is not a guide in learning jQuery or javascript for that matter, but you don't have to be familiar withe either to get this code up and working.

This books is targeted at a specific tool and I am giving it 5 stars because its coverage is complete, the code was clear and usable and I think anyone looking to add this functionality would be able to apply it using this book pretty easily.

Helps you get up and running with Drag n Drop

I enjoyed this book, and after reading through it and following the examples, was able to get up and running with Gridster. It was easy to see how I could apply the knowledge learnt in this book to my own projects.

I'd say this book was probably aimed more towards people starting out with jQuery and plugins. It would be good for someone starting out to jump straight into a really fun and useful example of how and what you can achieve with it. The techniques described in terms of debugging and interacting with jQuery plugins could easily be transfer to working with and extending other ones.

I'd have liked the book to be a little longer, and as a previous reviewer mentioned, to go into cross browser considerations. Overall though, a great little read and a fun project to work on.

Great approach to healing cancer naturally and promoting health long-term

I found Bill Henderson's latest book after I heard that someone had cured their CLL cancer naturally (Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia). My father-in-law has that type of cancer as well as prostate cancer, so I dove into the book.

I am impressed at the research that Bill and Carlos have done. As they say, we are at a loss in this country for studies and testing done on natural remedies for cancer because of the huge and entrenched pharmaceutical, insurance, and medicine industries. Despite this, they have pulled together studies and evidence both from the US and abroad, and have compiled a simple protocol that, as they say, "this is what [they] would do if [they] had cancer". The focus is on effective, natural, and inexpensive therapies that have no known toxicity in the body. I appreciate all aspects of this approach! Certainly, there are a lot of folks out there who will sell you expensive therapies, so it's a breath of fresh air that they are focusing on inexpensive, but effective ones.

I ended up doing the test that they recommend, which shows the level of rapidly dividing cells in the body, even though I have no diagnosis of cancer. It showed a higher-than-normal level, so I've decided to adopt the protocol (after researching it carefully and comparing to other studies and reviews of each element of the protocol). I am so happy to finally have the motivation to kick sugar and get on the path of health so that I can preserve and enhance my health as I get older!

As they say, you have to take charge of your own healthcare. I'm a true believer in that. I got through another health incident a few years ago without surgery, only because I researched and questioned, and then followed my intuition. It's the same with cancer. This book will shift your fundamental understanding of what cancer is, and I think the world (the US especially) needs to really pay attention to this.

Alternative treatments for Cancer treatment

A very practical, informational book written by a man who lost his wife to cancer and the established medical approach to the disease. He outlines a number of current alternatives and his new understanding of the disease, the human body and the approach that he would use should he find himself facing cancer. Thanks for the book, I have given it to a couple of friends, so that if nothing else, they realize that they have options and when the medical establishment says there is nothing to be done, it simply means there is nothing that they have to offer.

Only for beginners

If you are a musician and you know much of anything about music licensing--if you belong to BMI or other PRO and know what they do; if you know what kind of license you need to record a cover song and put it on a CD--then this book is way too basic for you. I'm quite disappointed because the book is padded with forms that are readily available on line, and with Q&As of the usual type you hear at music conferences (Lots of gossip and name-dropping), but it really lacks the nuts-and-bolts of exactly how to get your music placed and sold.

A look into another world in another time

Yet the writing is so full that we can feel part of this other world.

I came to this story by the back door. My first introduction to Somerset Maugham was through the movie "The Razor's Edge" (1946) staring Tyrone Power as Larry Darrell. I have no idea as to how much it was adapted from the book. Then in 1984 we watched Bill Murray as Larry Darrell. This film lost what magic the 1946 film had. So it was time to read the book. Yes I know very few films can do more than present the essence of a book. Turns out that even the older film wrote Summerset out of some of the scenes.

Larry is back from the war (WWI). As with many of us he is left with nagging questions about why one person lives and another must die. This problem leads Larry to search for the answers. He turns down opportunities and takes up a lifestyle to help him find answers. This story is told or narrated by Somerset Maugham himself. In the book Somerset takes more of an active part in the story. Larry came as close as any of us to the answer, he seeks and we leave him much the same way one enters and leaves your life.

Almost Too Good to Be True

The book, that is. The stories and pictures are just unbelievably warm and beautiful. I often read this short book cover to cover during Chanukah--one sparkling little gem a night. Just perfect for adults and, I'm sure, children, too. In fact, I can't imagine anything nicer than to read these to a kid on Chanukah. This book is the perfect gift, to yourself or anyone else. And if you can find yourself a hardcover copy, then you're *really* in luck.

I really enjoyed this book. This book has eight stories, one for each night of Hanukkah. All the stories were interesting and had beautiful illustrations. My favorite story was The Power of Light. Isacc Bashevis Singer is a Nobel Prize Winner. This is a great book.
