About the Author
ROBERT D. MARCUS, late of the State University of New York College at Brockport, wrote on late-nineteenth-century American politics as well as on the United States in the 1960s. He developed materials for collaborative learning techniques and edited several dozen books for Brandywine Press.

DAVID BURNER, professor of history at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, has written two books on John F. Kennedy as well as books on Herbert Hoover, the 1960s, and the Democratic Party in the 1920s, including a number of textbooks. Burner has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship and is currently writing a treatise on the administration of George W. Bush.

ANTHONY MARCUS teaches at the University of Melbourne, Australia. He has taught at the City University of New York, the State University of New York, and Hofstra University and served as dean at St. John's University and at the American University in Dubai. He has published numerous books and articles on American history and Afro-American life and culture. His most recent book covers the life and work of radical editor George Breitman.

A History Book That Actually Catches My Attention

This book is great. My teacher requires us to read 3 chapters every week and reflect on them and the stories are so interesting. This is a much better way to learn history because you get an inside look at how different events changed individual lives. It's very interesting and some articles are even a bit graphic. Some actually got me a little emotional. This is a great book and I recommend it to anyone learning history.

I love Jerry D Young stories!! It has the right balance to light and heavy... as in it's not too fluffy but it's not going to give you nightmares. One thing about the stories is that the person always has a bunch of money and knowledge. Hhmm.. I hope if something ever happens then I am with someone like that cause I have neither lol

Great thoughts, weird at the end

This collection of Osho's wisdom, recorded from extemporaneous speeches rather than written all at once, offered many insights into the nature of negative and positive emotions. I definitely highlighted quite a few pearls like:
"Many people think that sentimentality is spirituality. But emotions are as mental as thoughts, and what you call your heart is as much in your head as your head. You can become emotional very easily. You can cry and weep with tears falling down, big pearl-like tears - but it is nothing spiritual."
"Sadness is passive anger and anger is active sadness."
"When you see anger in others, go and dig within yourself and you will find it there; when you see too much ego in others, just go inside and you will find ego sitting there. The inside functions like a projector; others become screens and you start seeing films on others which are really your own tapes."
"There is one and only one way to understand that to be angry is to be stupid: watch anger in all its phases, be alert to it so it does not catch you unawares; remain watchful, seeing every step of the anger. And you will be surprised: that as awareness about the ways of anger grows, the anger starts evaporating. And when the anger disappears, then there is a peace. Peace is not a positive achievement. When the hatred disappears, there is love. Love is not a positive achievement. When jealousy disappears, there is a deep friendliness towards all."

For me, the only thing that keeps this from being a five star book is the section at the end with "practical" suggestions on exercises for meditation, which are often pseudoscientific and almost all...well, weird.

The format wasn't perfect on the Kindle but the content was great.

Osho books are kind of life savers for me. They uplift me, give me hope, strength and understanding for others. When I feel angry and frustrated I read his advices and keep being reminded that those are only the materialistic things and ppl who I should care about. It gives me more emotional freedom.

About the Author

Pete Pfitzinger, the top American finisher in the 1984 and 1988 Olympic marathons, is a respected coach, exercise physiologist, and administrator of high-performance sport. He established himself as one of the best marathoners in U.S. history by outkicking Alberto Salazar to win the 1984 U.S. Olympic Trials. That same year he received the DeCelle Award for America’s best distance runner and was named Runner of the Year by the Road Runners Club of America. He is also a two-time winner of the San Francisco Marathon and finished third in the 1987 New York City Marathon. He is a member of the Road Runners Club of America’s Hall of Fame.

Although best known as a marathoner, Pfitzinger was highly successful at shorter distances with personal bests of 22:46 for 5 miles, 28:41 for 10K, 43:37 for 15K, and 1:03:14 for the half marathon. He won national championships at 15K and 30K and held the American record for 20 miles. As a coach, Pfitzinger has more than 30 years’ experience helping runners achieve their personal goals, whether it’s completing their first 5K or competing with distinction on the world stage. He is currently responsible for coaching, athlete development, and performance planning as a general manager for High Performance Sport New Zealand, supporting over 400 Olympic-level and emerging international athletes.

Pfitzinger is also a successful author, having written Road Racing for Serious Runners (1998), Advanced Marathoning (2001), and Advanced Marathoning, Second Edition (2009), all from Human Kinetics. He was a senior writer for Running Times from 1997 to 2008 and author of the magazine’s most popular column, “The Pfitzinger Lab Report.”

Pfitzinger is a graduate of Cornell University (BSc, MBA) and the University of Massachusetts (MSc exercise science). He and his wife, New Zealand track Olympian Christine Pfitzinger, live in New Zealand with their two daughters, Annika and Katrina.

Philip Latter is a senior writer for Running Times and the head cross country coach at Swain County High School in North Carolina. He has also been the head cross country coach at Radford University in Virginia and the lead assistant at Fort Collins High School in Colorado, where he helped guide the Lambkins to three Nike Cross Nationals appearances. In addition to Running Times, his writing has appeared in Runner’s World and on RunnersWorld.com and ESPNRise.com.

A runner for more than 15 years, Latter set four school records at the University of North Carolina at Asheville and was a five-time All-Big South runner and a two-time member of the All-Academic team. He holds PRs of 4:01 (1500 meters), 8:32 (3000 meters), 14:47 (5000 meters), 31:24 (10,000 meters), and 1:12:11 (half marathon).

Latter lives in Bryson City, North Carolina, with his wife, Macy, and two daughters, Aspen and Willow. He continues to train seriously for road races of all distances, mostly on the trails of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, which sits exactly one mile from his doorstep.

This will be the gold standard for 5Ks-half marahtons like Advanced Marathoning is for the marathon

Got this because I went from 3:00 to 2:55 to 2:54 to 2:50 to 2:49 on plans out of Advanced Marathoning and this is by the same great author. Pfitzinger and Philip Latter know running and are great at making plans and writing books. Lot of variety in the plans based on how much weekly mileage you'd like to do. This should be the gold standard for 5Ks-half marahtons like Advanced Marathoning is for the marathon. Highly recommend this book!

If you ever wanted one book to provide guidance to training for multiple distances, as well as to better understand the physiology behind the recommended training routines, this is your book. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve their running, or anyone who needs good ideas of how to safely train and care for themselves. There are portions of the book that are a bit dry science, but there is also a healthy dose of real-life stories of accomplished runners who can motivate the rest of us to do our best.

Not Just for the Elite

While this book is intended for "serious" runners, it's also an excellent resource for those of us who might be a little less serious about the sport. Although I've only done a couple of 5K races, I found a lot of the information very relevant: the chapter on nutrition was enlightening and all the pictures in the supplementary training section were very helpful. And finally, I loved all the write-ups on the different runners--they were a nice personal touch, well-written, and inspiring. Thanks to Pete Pfitzinger and Philip Latter for getting me motivated
