Jack's Best Kept Secret

When Kerouac was good he was superb. This is young love in a glorious, mind-bending nutshell. Beautifully written and deeply felt.
When I was much younger and had experienced my first brutal betrayal in life, this novel was my greatest comfort. Kerouac had uncanny vision into the human heart, and was capable of expressing the awful paradox of young love, the joy and pain of it, it terms that were never sentimental, and often quietly heroic.

a better portrayal of adolescence than Holden Caulfield

If you are a fan of Kerouac then this is a must. It is more lyrical and poetic than ON THE ROAD, yet not as difficult to read as Lonesome Traveller. I enjoyed the first person narrative and was keen to see the switch to third person in the closing chapter as J.D. leaves adolescence behind. Kerouac artfully captures the feelings that accompany a burgeoning love affair even if the characters are only 17. I would highly recommend!

a "sneaky quiet sprint" through a teen love story

Life is not sanitized and easy. Kerouac knew this from hard-bitten experience. The amazing thing about Jack was that when it was over, he could always sing about it in his books. he does so here in "Maggie Cassidy."
I have felt the kind of stuff Jack talks about in this book. The illusion of teen "love" is one of the most wretched feelings in all the world...its elation is too high...too painful. Its ending is wrenching of the soul...usually quickly followed by the joy of illusory freedom. Still, it sticks your head for years after like an annoying song that won't go away--Keroauc gets all this down in one hundred and ninety-four pages...amazing.
Get this book. I recommend it highly to all who've been stung by what they thought was love when they were young.

Amazing book

Our librarian bought our school three copies so we can read Hitler's Astrologer in school. On the second day all three copies were checked out! A lot of us were waiting for a while because everyone kept reading them, so I bought my own. And let me tell you I don't regret it. The story is so intriguing and every chapter is a new perspective on a new person you're following. It's very simple to keep up with everything that is happening because the writing is great.

As a high school student, I read this book for one of my history projects about World War II. Even after the project, I continued reading the book because it is so captivating. The way it was written, it jumps between different characters perspectives and it's almost like you're reading a movie.

The topic is interesting but the way it is presented takes it's toll. Too many different threads and there is constantly jumping between them which is not pleasant to read. It causes constant disruptions and the book as a whole is far too long.

Loved this book! This book as everything; legal thriller with lots of mystery and a love "attraction". Based on a premise that could actually come about this story kept me reading far to late into the night. I couldn't put it down and was disappointed when I finished it. About the Author
Neil V. Watson and the members of his lab at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada study sex-related aspects of the structure and function of the nervous system, with ongoing grant support from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. His work on topics ranging from the effects of steroids on cell survival, to the neural control of reproductive behavior, to human cognitive sex differences has appeared in a variety of journals, including the Journal of Neuroscience, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, and Brain Research. Dr. Watson received his undergraduate and master's degrees from the University of Western Ontario and his Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia. Following a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, Berkeley, he joined the faculty at SFU in 1996 where he is now Professor of Neuroscience in the Department of Psychology. He teaches biological psychology to hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students each year. S. Marc Breedlove, the Barnett Rosenberg Professor of Neuroscience at Michigan State University, has written over 130 scientific articles investigating the role of hormones in shaping the developing and adult nervous system, publishing in journals including Science, Nature, Nature Neuroscience, and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science. He is also passionate about teaching-in the classroom, and in the greater community through interviews with the Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, and Newsweek, as well as broadcast programs such as All Things Considered, Good Morning America, and Sixty Minutes. He has active grant support from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke and the National Institute of Mental Health. Dr. Breedlove is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Association for Psychological Science.

Pretty good

Very interesting textbook. Easy to read even though the subject material is dense. It can take a while to really wrap your mind around it all. My Biopsych class in Fall I think was one of the first to use it so the website wasn't completely functional yet which kind of sucked. It lacked those extra study resources. It is cool to have a book that has such up to date information in it. Even mentions Pixar's Inside Out which just came out earlier this year.

Gathering more than a hundred personal narratives from Americans and from Japanese, Pacific Skies recounts a history of air combat in the Pacific theater. Included are the words of such famous aces and bomber pilots as Joe Foss, Pappy Boyington, Dick Bong, and Curtis Lemay, as well as the words of many rank-and-file airmen. Together their stories express fierce individualism and resourcefulness and convey the vast panorama of war that included the skies over Pearl Harbor, Wake, and Guadalcanal and missions from Saipan and Tinian.

Interesting Take on the Pacific Air War!

There have been many memoirs and histories of the air war in the Pacific published. Some are by famous fliers like Pappy Boyington and George Kenney; others by less well-known Pacific vets. Some were published during the war; others decades later. University professor Jerome Klinkowitz takes over 100 such narratives and weaves them into a unique chronicle of air combat.

PACIFIC SKIES, published in 2004 by University Press of Mississippi, offers a fresh and fascinating look at American fliers in combat. He incorporates the reminiscences of various combatants within a framework that sets the stage for that veteran's narrative and then provides perspective and commentary on what that person wrote. In some cases the individual's take on "what happened" was wildly inaccurate as to results actually achieved. In other cases wartime censorship shaped what was presented. Perspectives and attitudes changed as the years passed and so on.

Many of the works referenced in Klinkowitz's book - CARRIER COMBAT, BAA BAA BLACK SHEEP, GRIM REAPERS, I COULD NEVER BE SO LUCKY AGAIN, IRON EAGLE, DAUNTLESS HELLDIVERS and PUSHING THE ENVELOPE - are considered classics in the field. Klinkowitz's learned commentary on each makes for fascinating reading and provides new insights into the original.

While PACIFIC SKIES isn't your conventional "I was there" military history, it is a marvelous, entertaining and thought-provoking read. As I was reading it, I kept thinking of Paul Harvey's tag-line: "And now you know...the rest of the story" and how much that fit PACIFIC SKIES. Highly recommended.

This book is a necessarily shortened version of the air war in the Pacific, but is particularly useful in giving specific references in the published literature for each facet mentioned. Most of the major players and incidents are given some coverage, but a book by the people involved is given for each one. This includes Japanese as well as American and English sources. There is a moderately long section on the various factors considered in the deployment of the two atomic bombs, as well as discussion on the personnel involved.
