Enjoyed

As this was the text book for a classical civilization course I took, I found that this book was pleasantly readable, unlike most college texts. It was detailed enough so that it almost read like a novel at times, yet covered over 1000 years in the history of Rome so that it served as a good knowledge base. In addition, I enjoyed the fact that it took the knowledge one step further and analyzed WHY certain events occured (eg. the fall of the Western Roman Empire and why the East survived). I find many history texts that simply focus on WHAT occured and don't get into more detail. I liked how Starr divided Roman History into four units, with each section revolving around a central and important figure in Roman history (Hannibal,Caesar,Hadrian,St. Augustine). I found the "Roman Life" sections after each Unit to be a little bland at times, but the sections that were good were well written to hold my interest. I am very intrigued with ancient Roman history, and I found this text to be a worthwhile book, for academics or leisure.

Worthwhile For A Small Book.

The author does a fair job of introducing Roman History to the beginer. The who, what, and why are actually addressed. Many of the significant people are lucidly described. The sections on the Etruscan infuence, Rome's legacy to the modern world, and Roman law on pgs.10-14,54-59,152-5 were what I found to be of crucial importance. Lastly, the further reading and pronunciation glossary were also helpful.

About one fourth in this book, and so far it hardly brought any useful insights.
It tries to classify chinese words by categorizing individual characters and then exploring the way they are combined, only to find out that basically all sorts of combinations are commonly used, thus making this categorization not very helpful to begin with.
Most of the words used as examples seem very rare as well, so it does not help much in either learning new vocabulary, or giving a better insight in vocabulary that you may already know.

Fantastic Material

I usually don't write any reviews, especially good ones, but I simply could not avoid it this time because of how much I loved these books! I purchased all four of them for my students, and they got into the music right away. What I find unique about these pieces is how complex and interesting they are musically while not too technically difficult. My students love working on these pieces, and I don't even have to push them that hard to practice anymore. The "Kat Notes" (short guidance sentences) are helpful to them when they practice on their own. I recommend these melodic works to anyone who is looking for new and interesting piano material. I'd also like to see an earlier level book from this composer.

Another winner from Jamie Oliver

I have been a fan of Jamie's cookbooks since his first (The Naked Chef). His recipes and advice are down-to-earth and presented in a fun, friendly way.
This book is no different. Jamie gives us common-sense answers to everyday issues. "What do I need in stock?" "How can I use _______?" I fill in the blank with things like eggplants, zucchini (courgettes), chilies...you name it. "How can I avoid wasting food?" That's a big one with me. With the best intentions I plan menus and cook for the week. Somehow I always end up throwing away perfectly good food or not-so-well-prepared food. This book answers the questions and offers solid advice.
My freezer is now full of properly portioned (for me) cheese, fruit and meat. It also has frozen ends and bits of veggies, chicken bones and other bits (like tomato paste...who uses a whole can at once...not me) to use for broths and sauces.
Jamie uses everyday terms, not culinary la-dee-dah, condescending chef-speak.
This is a good read with good recipes.

Fresh, complex food on the cheap

I've always loved Jamie Oliver recipes, and own 5 other cookbooks of his, but, as with most cook books, not much consideration was ever given to cost of ingredients. Until this one. I've made a few so far and it really does help save money. You'll find recipes using cheaper cuts of meat, canned and frozen produce, dry spices, etc, and all to GREAT effect. I applaud a chef who decides to use frozen spinach in a recipe and maximizes the overall flavor. I'm really excited to continue on through this book!

We absolutely love this book! Jamie is brilliant, and we love that his ideas for using left-overs is so practical. I love good food, and I hate throwing food away. We love fresh ingredients, but don't want to have to shop daily, so it's wonderful to have great ideas for tonight's fresh dinner and great ideas for making good use of the bits left over as well. We love that he will give you options between top-dollar items and more reasonably priced substitutes. We have used so many ideas in this book, and have loved every last one.

I am going through this book with a Church Leadership ...

I am going through this book with a Church Leadership Coach, and we are also using with that leadership coach in our Church. We've found the book helpful on a couple of fronts: The description of the levels of Leadership has helped us as a Church to understand what it takes to build into people, to develop them and help them influence those around them. The ideas surrounding prioritization has really helped because it has forced the elders and the leadership board of my Church to see what my roles and tasks really are, and where I need to focus on so that they can lead well and we can impact our community. We do find though that the book rests to much on older examples, and doesn't do the job it could do in translating to the 21st century. It is a bit dated and it shows.

1- "Leadership is developed, not discovered. The truly "born leader" will always emerge; but, to stay on top, natural leadership characteristics must be developed. In working with thousands of people desirous of becoming leaders, I have discovered they all fit in one of four categories or levels of leadership: The Leading Leader...The Learned Leader...The Latent Leader..The Limited Leader."

2- "Management is the process of assuring that the program and objectives of the organization are implemented. Leadership, on the other hand, has to do with casting vision and motivating people."

3- "Listed below are some characteristics that must be exhibited with excellence before advancement to the next level is possible: Level I: Position/Rights...Level 2: Permission/Relationship...Level 3; Production/Results..Level 4: People Development/Reproduction....Level 5: Personhood/Respect."

Not the best Maxwell book. Light on content and impact

I can't quite agree with most reviewers on this one. If you have either read other Maxwell books or if you have read other leadership books in general, this one will feel like a rehash. I think Maxwell is a good author and trainer, and I have enjoyed some of his other books; but this books runs very thin. You are much better off reading his original books on leadership (e.g., The 21 Irrefutable Laws). I have finished most of his books with a few key takeaways; this one I left with none. Just can't recommend it.
