Amazing books and plots
By Silje Camilla Rønning
I love these books! They're amazing, never boring, and there's so much emotion in the characters, which are wonderfully drawn. Some stories are sadder than others, but all of these books have it all; a great plot, nicely drawn characters, epic battles, and amazing monsters.
I would recommend these books for everyone who likes WOW.

Waking, Dreaming, Being: Self and Consciousness in Neuroscience, Meditation, and Philosophy, by Evan Thompson

A renowned philosopher of the mind, also known for his groundbreaking work on Buddhism and cognitive science, Evan Thompson combines the latest neuroscience research on sleep, dreaming, and meditation with Indian and Western philosophy of the mind, casting new light on the self and its relation to the brain.

Thompson shows how the self is a changing process, not a static thing. When we are awake we identify with our body, but if we let our mind wander or daydream, we project a mentally imagined self into the remembered past or anticipated future. As we fall asleep, the impression of being a bounded self distinct from the world dissolves, but the self reappears in the dream state. If we have a lucid dream, we no longer identify only with the self within the dream. Our sense of self now includes our dreaming self, the "I" as dreamer. Finally, as we meditate―either in the waking state or in a lucid dream―we can observe whatever images or thoughts arise and how we tend to identify with them as "me." We can also experience sheer awareness itself, distinct from the changing contents that make up our image of the self.

Contemplative traditions say that we can learn to let go of the self, so that when we die we can witness its dissolution with equanimity. Thompson weaves together neuroscience, philosophy, and personal narrative to depict these transformations, adding uncommon depth to life's profound questions. Contemplative experience comes to illuminate scientific findings, and scientific evidence enriches the vast knowledge acquired by contemplatives.

Review

In a game-changing book that is both an intellectual tour de force and the courageous statement of a life's ideal, Thompson brilliantly demonstrates how Indian philosophical thought can join forces with the neurosciences to create a new science of the conscious mind. A must-read for anyone who believes that the future of philosophy is crosscultural.

(Jonardon Ganeri, University of Sussex and the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London)

Evan Thompson, a philosopher with a deep knowledge of Indo-Tibetan contemplative traditions and modern neuroscience, has written a brilliant and comprehensive book on the nature of awareness and the self. Waking, Dreaming, Being is a dazzling synthesis. Thompson takes on some of the most fundamental questions about the nature of mind and addresses them with remarkable creativity and clarity. This volume is a must read for any serious student of the mind and consciousness.

(Richard J. Davidson, New York Times-bestselling coauthor of The Emotional Life of Your Brain)

Drawing on multiple sources of knowledge, all tested by first-person experience and critical analysis, Thompson presents an illuminating neurophenomenological account of what it's like to be a conscious human being.

(Stephen LaBerge, author of Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming)

Waking, Dreaming, Being powerfully demonstrates how bringing cognitive science, philosophy, and Buddhism into a critical engagement can open innovative ways of exploring the 'hard problem' of consciousness. The blending of philosophical rigor and scientific knowledge with meditative insights, with the author's own remarkable life as the larger background, makes the book a real joy to read. This book will be an invaluable help to anyone who is interested in knowing how the fundamental questions of self, consciousness, and human existence can be explored in a way that combines the best of both East and West.

(Thupten Jinpa, author of Self, Reality and Reason in Tibetan Philosophy)

With extensive training in Buddhism, brain science, and phenomenology, Evan Thompson is uniquely positioned to reveal how different perspectives on the mind can be mutually illuminating. He begins with the Buddhist insight that there are many forms of consciousness--far more than traditionally recognized in the West--and he shows that these can be associated with deferent brain processes. The result is a richly original and integrated account of human mental life. Whether you are a curious newcomer or a seasoned expert, you have much to learn from this stunning synthesis of ancient wisdom and cutting-edge science.

(Jesse Prinz, author of The Conscious Brain and Beyond Human Nature)

(New York Times Book Review)

Extraordinary and exciting claims... beautiful ideas.

(Cosmos and Culture)

Contemplative and groundbreaking, Waking, Dreaming, Being is a welcome addition to college library philosophy shelves.

(Midwest Book Review)

Waking, Dreaming, Being is an exceptional and intriguing contribution to the exploration of consciousness as a multidimensional self and makes a convincing argument for the usefulness of philosophical, experiential, and scientific approaches to understanding consciousness.

(Marissa Krimsky Buddhadharma)

A rich, thought-provoking and poetic tour of a wide variety of phenomena of consciousness...

(Constructivist Foundations)

A magnificent tome.

(Big Think)

This is a ground-breaking exploration of conciousness and the self as they occur across the states of waking, falling asleep, dreaming, lucid dreaming, deep dreamless sleep, out-of-body experiences and dying. Evan Thompson's rich, beautifully written book interweaves lucid prose with relevant personal anecdotes, bringing the latest neuroscience together with ancient contemplative wisdom to offer valuable insightr into the nature of conciousness and the self.

(Miri Albahari Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews)

This remarkable book addresses deep philosophical questions from a unique perspective.

(Choice)

Waking Dreaming Being will soon be considered a landmark and a tipping point in consciousness investigations.Journal of Mind and Behavior

(Journal of Mind and Behavior)

A lucid and comprehensive account of the self as a subject of experience and agent of action.

(George T. Hole Philosophical Practice)

Review

Lively, engaging, and accessible, Waking, Dreaming, Being makes clear the relevance and relationship of contemplative neuroscience and neurophenomenology to core questions in the philosophy of mind.

(Alfred W. Kaszniak, Evelyn F. McKnight Brain Institute, University of Arizona)

Evan Thompson has been at the forefront of the fields of philosophy of mind and cognitive science for the past two decades, and his technical competence extends to Asian philosophy as well. Waking, Dreaming, Being ventures down paths that many 'serious scholars' fear to tread, dealing not only with traditional epistemological puzzles posed by dreaming and dreamless sleep but also with near-death experiences and other extraordinary states. Thompson covers a tremendous amount of ground in this volume, and his analysis is informed by an interdisciplinary breadth that is second to none.

(Robert H. Sharf, director of the Center for Buddhist Studies, University of California, Berkeley)

Waking, Dreaming, Being is the kind of sophisticated, yet still extremely incredibly accessible, treatment of consciousness we have been waiting for. Just what does it mean to be human, to have this range of experience, and what are various ways we can use, indeed must use, to investigate this? This book pushes us to think beyond our entrenched conceptual boundaries, not with vague arguments or wishful thinking but with equal doses of logical rigor and phenomenological empathy.

(William S. Waldron, Middlebury College)

All Atheists/Agnostics must read this book
By Nikhil Sharma
I have been a sceptic and non-believer since last 6 years and any reference to religion used to repel me. I came to believe that only Western philosophy, rooted in relentless questioning and never accepting blindly was the path to realization and truth. However, this book has opened my mind to an altogether different frame of thought. That Eastern thought (Hinduism, Buddhism) have so much depth and awareness of the Self and Consciousness never dawned upon me. I used to and still baulk at rituals and prayers, but Thompson has introduced me to the core thoughts of Eastern philosophy.

Thompson has carefully examined different topics like sleep, death, consciousness, awareness, while subjecting them to neurological scrutiny. His own personal beliefs also are apparent many a times and he does an excellent job of introducing seemingly esoteric topics like lucid dreams and Near-death and Out-of-body experiences.

The best two chapters are about Death and Self, wherein he examines what is it that happens when one dies (in traditional thought) versus when one leaves a body (in Eastern thought) and what "I" is composed of. He brings forth his own theory of 'Enactive approach to the Self' in understanding the Self.

I can't recommend this book highly enough to anyone who is interested in knowing about Self and the convergence of Eastern-Western philosophies.

*********** Update based on comments *************
I titled my review as "all atheists/agnostics must read this book" because many atheists (just like me) reject everything that has any semblance of being related to religion. Lot of practices (like Yoga, for example. Meditation is another one) have been 'marketed' in such a way that one might think that practicing them means giving in to religion. But that's a wrong way to look at things. Because though the origins of such practices may lie in the efforts of many many men/women who would have devoted centuries in mastering them and then passing them down to followers, but it does not make them (the practices) beneficial ONLY if you are a Hindu/Buddhist etc. So the benefits of, say Yoga, are independent of one's religious inclinations - it is ultimately a mish-mash of physical & mental exercises. So Yoga per se, in the current century, is probably being used by lot of such "gurus" to spread the influence/power of Hinduism, but this is exactly where Thompson's book helps you to accept that one can focus on the actual benefits of doing such 'things' rather than ignore them just because somebody is using them as a religious tool.

Thanks!

Is there consciousness beyond death? Probably...
By Pandafilanda
This book is an invitation to delve into buddhist philosophies and history and their points of contact with the Western science of the mind to inquire about the usefulness of meditation. The author, a brain scientist who is also a practicing buddhist, minutely discusses a challenging problem: can we still "exist" after our body stops living? Is there consciousness beyond death? The book also attends to the many paradoxes and perplexities that remain unanswered, though the author wisely engages the reader in an eventful dialogue. The book is wealthy in information, ingenious in elaborating arguments and exploring the subject matter from diverse and often oppositional points of view. It treats the reader as an adult capable of following a complex line of thought as the author is always willing to go the extra mile giving good examples and explaining the meaning and drift of every unfamiliar or technical term. The similarity between the title of Heidegger's essay "Building Dwelling Thinking" and the title of this book --"Waking Dreaming Being"--should not go unnoticed, as "Waking" gives us the opportunity to gather and build upon the elements of material reality, "Dreaming" is the place where we dwell in other to transform that material into knowledge, and "Being" is what we become through the activity of thinking and meditating. It is fun to read and never morose even in its most obscure passages. It took me a week to reach the last page, but when I finished I felt my week had been well spent.

Wide-ranging look at the intersection of neuroscience, philosophy and phenomenology
By Kartik Subbarao
This book covers a wide-ranging gamut of topics around consciousness, including various aspects of perception, awareness, dreaming/lucid dreaming, sleeping, dying, and a theory of the "enacted self" ("I" as a process). The chapters are chock-full of references to neuroscience studies that are quite relevant, presented neatly in context, and highly thought-provoking. The philosophical discussion (mostly Buddhist and some Vedanta) is well integrated and logically presented. The tone is simulanteously openminded and sober, striking an intriguing balance somewhere between the skepticism of Sam Harris and the idealism of Deepak Chopra.

One challenge for me was wading through some of the verbose logical explanations and repetition of some concepts. In places, the book seemed to be written to anticipate the arguments of adversarial philosophers; those parts were less interesting to me. I didn't care how well the book could defend some esoteric models or refute others. What interested me was how well it could bring together philosophical and neuroscientific perspectives, in a way that suggested promising avenues for both experiential and research investigation. It did a fine job at this.

The book concludes with an "enacted self" theory on the nature of the ego's construction, which brings together various threads explored in earlier chapters. As far as theories of enlightenment go, it's fairly restrained. It successfully resists (as does the book as a whole) the temptation to claim knowledge beyond one's own experience. It serves to close out the book on its own terms. For me, the book's conclusion was secondary. What's more compelling is the wide-ranging look at the current state and thoughtful recommendations for future work at the intersection of neuroscience, philosophy, and phenomenology.

When Did The Mahabharata War Happen? : The Mystery of Arundhati, by Nilesh Nilkanth Oak

In a drastic re-evaluation of astronomy observations from Mahabharata, using high-tech tool of modern astronomy and low-tech tool of the logic of scientific discovery, Nilesh Oak’s extraordinary book presents ordinary theory of astronomy observations that would lead to a quantum jump in our understanding of the Mahabharata War:
•How a theory based on single unifying idea corroborates 100+ astronomy observations
•Where to search for the year of the Mahabharata War – Epoch of 6500 years & Compact time interval of 3000 years
•How a single observation, previously known but unexplained, falsifies 96% of all proposals for the year of the Mahabharata War
•Why does it matter how long Bhishma was lying on the bed of arrows
•How ancient is the tradition of meticulous astronomy observations.

Acceptance of his theory leads to surprising conclusions about our current understanding of world civilizations, domestication of horses, dating of Ramayana or Vedas and antiquity of meticulous astronomy observations. Rejection of his theory would compel us to search for the likes of Newton and Lagrange, among the Sages of India, at least thousand years before Sir Isaac Newton & Joseph-Louis Lagrange.

Praise for 'When did the Mahabharata War Happen?: The Mystery of Arundhati'
"You have done a great job. I requested astronomers to consider if Arundhati had gone ahead of Vasisth in 1971, when I published 'Swayambhu' . But nobody cared. You are the first to do the great job!"
- P V Vartak (Author of 'Swayambhu' & 'Wastav Ramayana')

"A very interesting book to read. Author has approached dating of Mahabharat from a very innovative angle. He accurately predicts the date of the war. This book also gives a very good explanation of the nakshatras and their positions. It is facisnating to see the detailed research. A scientific approach in debunking all the theories so far. I highly recommend this book."

Validating the basic premise
By Skyblue
This is an interesting and thought provoking book. The author takes the reference made in Mahabharata that Arundhati (Alcor) is ahead of Visistha (Mizar) and uses the latest software to find the time period in the past when this was true. His research finds that this was indeed the case between 13000 BC and 4000 BC. He then goes on to use other astronomical references in Mahabharate to pin the date to 5561 BC.
Let us look at the basic premise itself. The reference to Arundhati goes like this. (Quoting from the book). Vyasa tells Dhritarashtra, day before the Mahabharata War: "My dear King, Arundhati (saintly wife of Vasistha) who is revered by the righteous all over the three worlds, has left her husband Vasistha behind". The remark indicates that Vyasa is refering to a recent observable event, that is not the norm. According to Author's own research, in 5561 BC, Arundhati was already walking ahead of Vasistha for the past 7500 years. Why would Vyasa consider it abnormal and an evil omen? Next, according to the author again, it takes a 9000 year cycle for Arundhati to go ahead or fall behind Vasistha. Hardly an observable event. Vyasa is clearly refering to something that has happened in the recent past, either days or weeks, that is a sign that war is emminent. We are not told of any other reference that lead the author to his interpretation. The basic premise itself then becomes questionable.
In this context, Vaidya's proposal in his book "The Mahabharata: A Criticism" that all astronomical references were added to the original text by Sauti, to swell the list of evil omens, becomes more convincing. In Sauti's time Arundhati was behind Vasistha, and she walking ahead of Vasistha would certainly be considered an evil omen.
The corroborating astronomical references also need careful evaluation. Many need assumptions that they refer to uranus, neptune or pluto, planets not observable to the naked eye. This needs another speculation that some advanced technology was available to observe and records these events. Other astronomical reference can be subject to differing interpretations. Thus it is possible they will corroborate other dates as well.
As per author's own admission, accepting a date of 5560 BC implies rejecting well known and accepted dates and facts like, domestication of the horse, beginning of bronze age, beginning of iron age, discovery of telescope or technology to observer the skies, no archeological evidence of any pre harappan civilization, etc. In fact it needs rewriting history as we know it.
Lay and casual reader cannot make a call on reserach like this. We can only do a sanity check. The better options would be to present this as a doctorate thesis where it will get scholarly scrutiny. Or present it as a paper at a historical conference, where it will be reviewed by peers.
The book as such is interesting if you are interested in subjects like these. The introduction to astromony is well written. You will be better off if you stop at this point to check out some youtube videos on basic astronomy. Nothing to beat animation, when it comes to understanding complex star motions. It is definitely needed if you want to understanding the theory presented in the book and give it some thought.
I also appreciate the final chapter where author candidly lists out the implications, and problems with the theory.
On the whole, it is worth taking the time to understand the subject and read the book and come to your own conclusions.

Astronomy's Veridical Use
By S. M. Sullivan
Now that I'm through reading the book 'When did the Mahabharata War Happen?' I am very impressed with the hard science in back of Nilesh Oak's ideas. By an ingenious use of astronomy software, he has verified P. V. Vartak's date of 5561 BC for the Mahabharata War, also systematically excluding the possibility of various other dates that have been offered. He has computer reckoned the possible dates for certain arrangements of planets as described in passages of the Mahabharata at the time of certain incidents. The book is not for someone who quails at learning new things about astronomy or Sanskrit, or one who resists new theories and ideas. Indeed it is difficult going, but well worth it.
What improvements could be made in this book? The science of archeology has made addresses to the problem of dating such events as the sinking of Dwarka (contemporary with Krishna's death), and how the Ramayana and the
Indus Valley Civilization fit into the puzzle of south Asia's history. If Nilesh Oak decides to revise his book so as to add an epilogue, I'd like to see some mention of new finds that either corroborate or cast doubt upon his findings. For instance, he could cover the Graham Hancock/Glenn Milne thermoluminescence dates from Dwarka, and the recent discovery of domesticated horse remains dated 9,600 years ago from Saudia Arabia, or the DNA evidence presented by Steven Oppenheimer, which tends to support the out-of-India theory.

One can count on the stars... for dating ancient Indian literature.
By Wim Borsboom
I first saw Mr. Nilesh Oak's videos online, which showed how astrological software was able to go back in time and confirm descriptions of the night sky, its planets, stars and constellations as they were recorded in ancient Indian literature, specifically the Mahabharata.
The Mahabharata describes the 18 day epic battle of Kurukshetra that took place in North-Western India many millennia BCE.

The range of dating of this battle by scholars is quite large.
The following is taken from Wikipedia:
. Most widely accepted date is 10th century BCE or 950 BCE, according to archeological evidences.
. S. Balakrishna concluded a date of 2559 BCE using consecutive lunar eclipses.
. R. N. Iyengar concluded a date of 1478 BCE using double eclipses and Saturn+Jupiter conjunctions.
. B. N. Achar states a date of 3067 BCE using planetary positions listed in the Mah'bh'rata.
. P. V. Holey states a date of November 13, 3143 BCE using planetary positions and calendar systems.
. P. V. Vartak calculates a date of October 16, 5561 BCE using planetary positions.
. K. Sadananda, on November 22 3067 BCE, Kurukshetra War started.

Mr. Oak confirmed Dr. Vartak's dating: October 16, 5561 BCE...

When I got a hold of this book I found it a very informative and absorbing read, as I knew very little about these kind of astronomical issues. The way it is written I could also use it as a primer.
The interesting and most important part of the book is of course how the writer arrived at the battle's date... but he did this in a different manner than the way Dr. Vartak did, thanks to this very graphic software. It so well describes the back-and-forth movements of Arundhati through the skies.
What stuck in my memory was how Mr. Oak's method proved the date of October 16, 5561 BCE right, but how he at the same time proved Dr. Vartaks's reasoning wrong.
Through my research in the Indus Script (Harappan Culture) I have been getting into the history of the Indus Valley from a totally different angle, an angle though that forced me to consider a much earlier dating of the Mahabharata War than the current scholarly consensus of 10th century BCE. This book convinced me conclusively of the early date.
I urge Mr. Oak to date the Ramayama and the ancient Vedic literature in a similar manner.

Great Sex Guide - Highly Recommend!
By Carla Davis
Written with a lighthearted, conversational tone, this book does an excellent job of giving a ton of interesting (and useful) information while still being super accessible! Did you know that recorded incidence kissing (with intent to...you know) goes all the way back to 1000BC, and in addition to feeling good, also serves as a way to pass testosterone? I didn't, and that's just one of many fascinating tidbits about the act of sex I learned in this book! This book walks you through the biology of sex, how it differs between organisms, before getting straight to the point: how can you have the best and happiest sex. Where this book shines is in it's specifics. It gives practical advice for all flavors of sex (even phone), so if you're looking to improve your technique or try something new, you're set! Also, the book talks openly about issues that can make sex go wrong and how to approach them with sensitivity, including when to bring up an issue with your doctor. And I especially liked how the author confronted the myth that bigger = better in regards to penis size. His no-nonsense approach takes the embarrassment that many feel when thinking about sex off of the table, so that you can get to the nitty gritty and take your sex (and relationships) to the next level. If you're looking to have great sex, this is the book for you!

A cute, realistic look into the issue of sex in a relationship
By Willie
This book is a must for newlyweds and has great advice for older couples also. communication is stressed and I agree that is probably the most important thing for a couple to keep in mind. Hiding things from each other always just ends in disaster. Good read.

Well written and clearly organized
By John G.
Bottom Line: I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone needing to learn AngularJS--especially for those who only have a limited understanding of Angular or for those who have gotten conflicting advice from the Web. This is a very well-written book and is organized in its presentation of the material. I purchased this book just a few days after it was released because I was under a deadline to write an AngularJS application for a company that had decided to go with Angular. Ordinarily, I would have waited until there were some reviews of the book before purchasing it, but it wasn't possible in this case, so I ordered it. And I'm very glad I did!

First, the book is concise (and that is a GOOD thing)! It is only 274 pages, so unlike some of the Phone Book volumes out there, it is possible to keep the book propped open while reading and coding. And because it IS concise, the examples are clearly explained without a lot of repetitious passages making the book needlessly longer. Each example was clearly explained…and then moved to the next logical topic.

Second, the authors are EXPERTS at Angular (they are from the Angular team, in fact). This gave me confidence that when they explained best practices (such as not using $scope everywhere, but instead use the "Controller as" syntax) --I could be confident that I was getting sound advice.

Third, the idea/thought flow worked well for me (as someone new to Angular), so it was especially important to get up to speed quickly. This book really helped me with that! And yes, there were a few places where I had to re-read a passage to "get it", but the overall flow of ideas was very accessible and the explanations clear and well written.

Bad Parts: not any to speak of--and quite honestly, I don't have any complaints about the book at all, but here are a few "observations" for those wanting to hear them. One area that I would have liked more explanation about was in using $scope vs "controller as" syntax…not because the subject is particularly difficult or confusing, but because nearly ALL examples out on the Web show the $scope way of doing things, so I would have like getting a bit more of "here's how to deal with those examples and convert them into this better paradigm." More on that wold have been helpful!

Also, I would have liked a bit more about using Angular services with async backend providers. It may be that this gets too much into the "weeds" of Promises and the like, but I ran into this right away when taking the principles from the book and trying to apply them in real life.

Overall, I can heartily recommend this book!

Great Introduction, better than the first book.
By Victor Alejandro
This is a great introduction to the framework. It gets you up to speed with Angular's most important concepts and ideas very quickly. By the second chapter you're working with modules, controllers and some of the built in angular directives. Chapter three is about unit testing, something that most other angular books leave out, which is a shame since Angular is not only built for productivity, it's built for ease of testing.Overall, a great book for people new to Angular.

The pictures are very haunting. Having spent some small amount of time in refugee exile communities in South Asia (with some who have been refugees from 1959) I fail to understand how we keep letting this happen. Is it greed? Is it ignorance? Is it hatred? According to UN statistics 43 million people and counting. Conflict, persecution, environmental. This has to stop. We all need to be a part of the solution.
