A Rose by any other name

This book is a gem!
The author skillfully avoids any kind of idle speculation. Nor does he at any point get dogmatic. He pretty much cuts to the core of the human condition in regards to the nature of self, reality, and the great beyond. And yet, he does this in a way that avoids overloading the reader with too much information. He does not waste words. I have found myself pondering single sentences from this book for days a time! And yet, it is a very easy and enjoyable read.
This book is the product a tremendous synthesis of interfaith spirituality, life-long devotion by the author, and esoteric sciences coupled with the findings of modern cutting edge science. It’s safe to say that some of the concepts presented in Practical Mysticism have the potential to clarify and amplify the understanding found in all religions and sciences, while at the same time clashing with none of them.
This book is not, however, an in-depth analysis of mystics throughout history, or lengthy extrapolations of lofty metaphysical concepts. Other books have done this. It is precisely what its title claims: Practical…. and rather paradigm shifting at that.

A Clear Concise Discussion of an Abstruse Subject

“Practical Mysticism,” the latest book by Dr. Paul Clark, is a publication of the Fraternity of the Hidden Light.” The Fraternity of the Hidden Light is a modern day fully contacted, Western Mystery School. Dr. Clark is the Fraternity’s Steward. In the interest of full disclosure I must point out I am a member of the Fraternity. However, I wish also to point out in the interest of full disclosure that I, personally, do not have any monetary interest in Dr. Clark’s book.
Members of the Fraternity will immediately see parallels between the subject matter presented in the book and the subject matter found in the preliminary course lessons. “Practical Mysticism” expounds and expands on many, but certainly not all, of the core concepts that are the centerpiece of the lessons.
Although members of the Fraternity and other students of the Western Mysteries will derive much insight from Dr. Clark’s profound wisdom, as conveyed in the book – wisdom that the general public cannot truly appreciate – Dr. Clark has, for the most part, made difficult material readily accessible to and understandable to the general public. Thus, the casual reader can comprehend the basic tenets laid out in the book even as certain other points alluded to by Dr. Clark presume more advanced knowledge of the Western Mysteries on the part of the reader to fully appreciate.
The material is presented clearly, straightforwardly, and succinctly. No prior knowledge of the Western Mysteries is required in order for one to obtain a basic understanding of the subject matter, of which the concept of ‘mysticism’ plays a critical part, as one would expect from the book’s title.
The word, ‘mysticism,’ has multiple meanings but a common theme runs through all of them. That theme has to do with the manner in which information and knowledge is acquired. Information and knowledge is generally acquired through the senses and through the intellect. But, another source of information and knowledge is available to a person: information and knowledge derived through “mystical” experience: a supra or trans-sense perceptual experience through which information and knowledge is obtained. Such Information and knowledge of one’s self and the world acquired through mystical experience is of a sort most individuals do not ordinarily tap into. Why is this? Our present day technological, materialistic society is antithetical to and therefore dismissive of methodology that conflicts with a basic platitude of science, namely, that nothing exists in this universe but for that which is physical. Mysticism undercuts the purported sanctity of that assertion.
Dr. Clark argues convincingly that the assertion – a sacred platitude of hard science – is false. More than that, Dr. Clark suggests that societal myths attempt to keep people in darkness as to the power that resides in each one of us. He lays bare the false presumptions of society in the first section of his book. That section is titled, “The Great Lies.”
Using plain English, Dr. Clark methodically explicates abstruse matters handed down to very few learned, discriminating intellects through the ages: the three aspects of consciousness and the nature of “Self;” unique insights into “The Pattern on the Trestle Board;” and “The Seven Stages of Unfoldment.” Had Dr. Clark’s book contained this information alone, the book would be well worth its price. But, Dr. Clark also shows the reader how to use this knowledge to tap into and unlock one’s own unique potential and thus begin the transformative process of “Self.” Thus, the book does have practical application, as exemplified in the book’s title. The informational foundation provides critical context for the subject matter’s application.
One final note: the words ‘mysticism’ and ‘magic’ are often conflated. For many people, the words are considered synonymous and, so, interchangeable. But there are differences to be sure even as there are areas in which mysticism, on the one hand, and magic qua magic, on the other, do overlap. Yet, the word, ‘magic,’ does not appear anywhere in Dr. Clark’s book. This, likely, wasn’t accident. The term, ‘magic,’ is fraught with so many negative, misleading or, otherwise incongruous connotations – referring alternately to trivial entertainment and trickery, or to witchcraft and sorcery, or, simply, to irrational superstition – that Dr. Clark probably thought it better to refrain from using the term at all, lest the sanctity, seriousness, and import of the book’s subject matter be diminished or lost.
But, Dr. Clark does mention the term, ‘Adept.’ Dr. Clark briefly discusses the meaning of the word toward the end of his exposition of and practical application of mysticism, tying that concept specifically to mysticism.
Dr. Clark states that, as one accrues a better understanding of consciousness and begins to align one’s individual consciousness with “God-Consciousness,” a transformation begins to occur. This, Dr. Clark says, is the ultimate “quest of the aspirant.”
For a fascinating, comprehensive account of the nature of mysticism and its practical application to one’s own life, Dr. Clark’s book is a worthy addition to one’s library on esoteric literature. I strongly recommend the book to those readers who are curious about the Western Mysteries generally and wish to gain comprehension of it; to students of the Western Mysteries who wish to gain a deeper understanding of the Mysteries; and to anyone who wishes to utilize the tools that Adepts use today, and have used in times past, to engage in the transformative process of “Self.”
For basic acquisition of knowledge of the Western Mysteries, or for acquiring a deeper understanding of and appreciation for the Western Mysteries, or for a practical application of that knowledge, Dr. Clark’s book, “Practical Mysticism,” will satisfy the reader’s needs and curiosity on any one of those levels.
