This Little Chick, by John Lawrence

Who says a little chick can’t make big, loud animal noises?

Most little chicks barely make a peep, but not this little chick! While his brothers and sisters nestle close to their mother hen, this little chick struts off on his own to make some new friends in the farmyard. And he has a wonderful time of it - sliding off the back of a shiny pink pig, hopping along with frogs, skipping with a flock of frisky sheep, and imitating all the sounds these animals make. Full of playful detail, John Lawrence’s bold, energetic engravings will keep toddlers smiling, long after the oinking, mooing, baaing, and quacking are over.

Amazon.com Review
This little chick has a lot to say. Making the rounds on the farm one day, our fine, feathered friend learns to mimic all his barnyard buddies, from pigs to frogs to cows: This little chick from over the way
went to laze with the cows one day.
And what do you think they heard him say?
Moo Moo Moo Moo Moo Moo
Young readers will love predicting what sounds the feisty chick will make next as he swims, jumps, and skips his way through the day. And everyone will be as ready as he is to curl up for a much-needed rest when he finally returns home to his mom to share all he has learned. John Lawrence's take on a traditional rhyme is enhanced by his eye-catching illustrations, made with vinyl engravings, printed wood textures, and watercolor washes. Especially marvelous are the black sheep frolicking in their curly, swirly wool coats. (Ages 1 to 4) --Emilie Coulter

From Publishers Weekly
Lawrence's (The Mysteries of Zigomar) closely detailed, dynamic vinyl engravings lift this book well above the typical barnyard sound survey. With their bold outlines, burnished colors, rich textures and genial-looking characters, the illustrations pull readers into every spread. The eponymous hero has a gift for mimicry. Strutting around on gangly orange legs, he visits five groups of animals, collecting their distinctive sounds. "This little chick from over the way/ went to skip with the lambs one day," writes Lawrence in a characteristic spread, "And what do you think they heard him say?" On the next spread, the chick is shown leaping into the sky with his fleecy friends as his "Baa" resounds typographically (and repeatedly) through the air. Elsewhere, as the chick entertains a mother duck and her young with his quacking, the aquatic setting becomes a feast of geometric patterns. Sound may be the little chick's forte, but the real pleasure of this book lies in the author/artist's visual imagination. Ages 2-up.

From School Library Journal
reSchool--When little chick goes visiting, he chats with his animal friends by using their very own noises. He "oinks" to the piglets, "moos" to the calf, "quacks" to the ducklings, etc. as their bemused mothers look on. At the end of his busy day, the gregarious orange-legged chick returns to his nest with much to relate to his family in "cheeps" liberally interspersed with moos, quacks, and ribbits. Then, hen and chicks slumber (in blissful quiet) on the very last page. This traditional repetitive rhyme is wonderfully enhanced by the bold and vigorous vinyl engravings of wide-eyed and jaunty barnyard animals. A layout that encourages listeners to supply the appropriate sounds by asking, "And what do you think they heard him say?" insures enthusiastic audience participation. Lap-sitters and toddlers can try to spot the incidental mouse, crow, and butterfly; can identify each of the critters as they form a sprightly parade across a spread; and can recap little chick's entire day by following his multilingual monologue at the very end. Not since Rosie the Hen's circumambulation in Pat Hutchins's Rosie's Walk (Macmillan, 1968) has a trip around the barnyard been so a"moo"sing, so "ribbit"ing, and so exu"baa"rant.

This Little Chick is the perfect preschool book!
By bibliobethica
This book is wonderful! It has a rhyming, repitive text that small children love. It is a lovely book to read aloud with one child or a group of children. Children quickly learn the rhyme and love to make the sounds of each of the animals. A must have for every preschool class and library story time!

Lots of Fun with Animal Sounds.....
By Roz Levine
"This little chick from over the way/went to play with the pigs one day./And what do you think/They heard him say?" So begins John Lawrence's exuberant picture book, and preschoolers will enjoy all the wonderful animal talk as Little Chick makes his way around the barnyard, imitating all his friends. He oinks with the pigs, quacks with the ducks, moos with the cows, baas with the lambs, and even ribbits with the frogs. And when he finally arrives home, shows his mother hen all he's learned that day. Mr Lawrence's repetitive, singsong text is cheerful and engaging and little ones will love "helping" you read, and practicing their animal sounds. But it's the large, bold and vibrant artwork, filled with humor and expressive detail, that really makes this book stand out and sparkle. This Little Chick is a happy, fun-filled read aloud, and a soon to be favorite at your house.
