Principal Yogacara Texts: Indo-Tibetan Sources of Dzogchen Mahamudra, by Rodney Devenish

The Yogacara Doctrine teaches one fundamental truth, namely that all beings are Buddha-'sattva Buddha evam'-or, in other words, all beings are aspects of one all-embracing absolute awareness, were they but to know it. This book sets a context for the study and meditation on ten pivotal texts of Yogacara. The source texts, translated from a practice perspective, derive from the Indo-Tibetan mahasiddha tradition and are presented with an ecumenical approach. As this collection of pithy Yogacara works will readily prove to the reader, the ancient 'Practice Tradition of the Yogin' (rnal-bhyor-pa'i sgrub-brgyud) is based on a clearly active realization of the essential nature of mind and consciousness gained through years of intensive examination and reflection. Yogacara approach advocates a dynamic form of meditation that is neither suppressive nor lethargic. The guide to this attainment, the mechanism that sharpens the mind's penetrative and illuminative qualities, is metaphysical inquiry.

From the Back Cover
The Yogācāra Doctrine teaches one fundamental truth, namely that all beings are Buddha--'sattva Buddha evaṃ'--or, in other words, all beings are aspects of one all-embracing absolute awareness, were they but to know it. This book sets a context for the study and meditation on ten pivotal texts of Yogācāra. The source texts, translated from a practice perspective, derive from the Indo-Tibetan mahāsiddha tradition and are presented with an ecumenical approach. Yoga is defined essentially as the exercise of a psychic faculty transcending intellect, whereby the individual may obtain conscious experience in the core of his or her being of mystical union with higher reality. Meditation is of inestimable value as a way of getting to the Truth. In this sense the Yogācāra approach advocates a dynamic form of meditation that is neither suppressive nor lethargic. The guide to this attainment, the mechanism that sharpens the mind's penetrative and illuminative qualities, is metaphysical inquiry.

As this collection of pithy Yogācāra works will readily prove to the reader, the ancient 'Practice Tradition of the Yogin' (rnal-bhyor-pa'i sgrub-brgyud) is based on a clearly active realization of the essential nature of mind and consciousness gained through years of intensive examination and reflection.

Clear, Concise and Relevant for Today!
By RCH
The introduction to this volume PRINCIPAL YOGACARA TEXTS covers both the historical and scholastic sources of the oral tradition, and the author discusses the effects these texts have had on the modern traditions of meditation today. Thus a comprehensive context for the Yogacara core texts is presented in this volume.

As a companion volume to NATURAL MIND MEDITATION, which is an invaluable practice text on implicate self-reflexivity, the texts of PRINCIPAL YOGACARA TEXTS and the meditation instruction of its companion volume NATURAL MIND MEDITATION discuss the origins of the key concept of implicate self-reflexive awareness, svasamvedana and how it arose probably at the first split of the Mahasamghikas and Sthavirvadas some several hundred years after the Parinirvana of the Buddha.

Some strata of early Buddhism, such as that of the Sthavirvadas, do not contain this central principle, nor is it an overtly working basis in sattipathana, the four applications of mindfulness. Implicate self-reflexivity is understood by the ancient traditions presented here and modern quantum physics as the fundamental basis of all that is and points out how remarkable it is that this central principle runs throughout the Yogacara Texts, but further how this principle has great implications for theories of mind and how it is the basis of the Buddhist traditions that evolved subsequently throughout the Buddhist world of the Northern Schools and which informs their works and practices.

Self-reflexive awareness, svasamvedena, is central to Mahayana and a critical component of the esoteric tradition of Vajrayana. Though contemporary Theravada may not discuss it, however the Theravada do recognize the "luminous mind" as a potential to be unfolded. Although even some Northern Schools especially those of some Madhyamaka-Prasangika - who are Mahayana - ultimately reject the principle of svasamvedana as in some quarters of the Gelug School in Tibet, the author shows how it is exclusively the Yogacara (and hence in Tibet, the Jonang, Ka'gyu, Nying-ma and Sakya) who alone positively recognized this pivotal principle of the 'nature' of mind as a working basis of evolving, sentient life.

These volumes are critical for the practice of Dzogchen and Mahamudra. With clarity and skill the author presents these foundational texts and the context for their derivative practices, as well as provides guidance as to the practice that discloses this marvel of Awareness, and its broad implications for evolving humanity.

Precious little book
By mahipal
Here we have 10 of the most precious "skillfull means" instructions of the ancient mahasiddhas presented in a very stimulating way. And not less important in the end the author indicates a most distinguished book from one of his principle teachers Cf. Eugene Halliday. The Title of the book is "Reflexive Self-Consciousness" in his Collected Works series (available from the "Eugene Halliday Society"). This book is an enlightening journey into the crux of the matter: How to liberate consciousness from the closed system of our mind, where our whole "weltanschauung" is now structured together as a result of "the experience-record (karma)" and bending it back onto itself. Extremeley intelligently and elegantly presented in deed!

A profound look into the Yogacara tradition!
By YY
This book, Principal Yogacara Texts, by Rodney Devenish, is an remarkable source of insight into the Indo-Tibetan tradition of Dzogchen/Mahamudra. Included is a concise introduction and brief historical analysis for the Yogacara tradition offering context and leading to deeper appreciation for the text and teaching. The clarity of the translations along with the in-depth commentary is very enlightening and speaks to the core message behind the texts. Also included for the reader is a very useful glossary of Sanskrit/Tibetan/English terms. Without a doubt, this book is an invaluable companion for those inquiring into the nature of Reality.
