A great drama that asks "what is real?"

ELECTRIC ANT feels like Blade Runner from a hallucinogenic perspective. Those unfamiliar with the average Philip K Dick tale may be a bit confused at times, but it won't be long before your scribbling down names of his many novels to check out after finishing the last issue of ELECTRIC ANT.
This comic is based off PKD's short story of the same name, and is adapted by David Mack, drawn by French artist Pascal Alixe, and with covers by Paul Pope. There's almost a vibe of underground quality to reading this mini series. There isn't a lot of science-fiction work told in this style which is gritty, psychological, imaginative, sexy, and sensible. Sci-fi is rarely treated as mature as Phil Dick treated it (in this case, back in 1969).
One of his novels that gets mentioned in this story is THE THREE STIGMATA OF PALMER ELDRITCH, dubbed the "ultimate LSD" novel. This story carries that same luggage. A heavy exploration of what it means to be human, and how best to cope with that unveiling. This is a great comic to check out if your into hardcore sci-fi (that's not for kids).

This book is an excellent graphic novelization of a Philip K Dick short story. The artwork of the in-story world is clearly influenced by Bladerunner. Classic PKD themes of reality bending around the main character, an interesting female character and a bit of paranoia. You can clearly see the themes that emerged in PKD's life experience throughout this work. If you are familiar with his biography at all you will notice distinct moments that could have been lifted from his life experience with mind/reality altering drugs and philosophical studies.
There are some subtle tie-ins to David Mack's Kabuki world, if you are familiar with Mr. Mack's work, you will be quite pleased with this. Definitely worth the money. I paid half price due to the awesomeness that is Amazon, but believe I would have been just as pleased paying full price.

Good rendering

I have to admit, I haven't read the original - but, with Mack doing the writing, something good has to come out anyway. This one's another meditation on what an electronic mind would be like, from the inside, and whether the e-person would even know - a theme that took center stage in Dick-inspired Blade Runner. But, after a while, it takes on some of the character of Stanislaw Lem's story of planet filled with people imitating robots, unbeknownst to each other, but in reverse.
Capable art and a good enough story, I enjoyed this - but can't say that every library has to have it.
