About the Author
Two days after Marc Elliot was born, he was diagnosed with a rare birth defect called Hirschsprung’s disease. Hirschsprung’s had given him almost no working intestines and no ability to digest food on his own. Despite high odds of death or a horrible quality of life, one brave surgeon, Dr. Jesse Ternberg, took Marc under her wings, took a chance and saved his life. After spending the first six months of his life in St. Louis Children’s Hospital, undergoing seven experimental surgeries, Marc became known as the “miracle baby.” However, Marc's challenges did not end after he left the hospital. At the age of nine, he was diagnosed with Tourette syndrome, a neurological disorder that causes him to make involuntary motor and vocal tics. As Marc grew older, his tics manifested in many different ways, from “ticcing” inappropriate words to blurting out random noises, including barking like a dog and chomping his teeth. Over the next 10 years, Marc struggled to live a normal life in the suburbs of St. Louis. Aside from the scars that stretched across his abdomen and the frequent outbursts of tics and offensive language, Marc lived with a special enthusiasm for life. He was a talented thespian, was active in tons of sports, and even was elected student body president of his high school. Marc attended Washington University in St. Louis, where he majored in biology and pursued a pre-medicine path in hopes of following in the footsteps of the pediatric surgeon who saved his life. After graduating in May 2008, Marc embarked on a nationwide speaking tour. The tour was intended as “just something to do” before he became a doctor. His subject was tolerance. In his presentation, "What Makes You Tic?” he drew on his experiences of not fitting in, of not feeling comfortable with others, to discuss fundamental lessons about tolerance—how to live with our own and others’ differences. Little did he know this would become his calling. Over the past three years, Marc has spoken to hundreds of groups and organizations, reaching out to more than 200,000 individuals in the United States and internationally. At the age of 27, Marc has now found a way to use his own story, his triumph over handicaps, as a way of helping individuals around the world find their own path to tolerance—for themselves and others.

Incredible Book with Inspirational Meaning

Marc's story is about a man who is faced with challenges that are beyond what any person should have to experience. However, as this book reveals, Marc was able to not only overcome these challenges but to grow as a result of them. His story moves the soul. This book will take your emotions from laughing to crying and back again. It not only allows you to live his journey, but also it forces you to challenge yourself and question how judgmental we can be at times. His story eloquently points out that we should never allow these judgments to negatively impact the life of others. Live and Let Live!!! Thanks Marc for the incredible story!

Simply Amazing

Marc has one of the most incredible stories I've ever read about. The second I picked this book up, I could not put it down. Marc's challenges make him so incredibly relatable. I was so inspired after reading the book, but more importantly it challenged me. We all get stuck in our ways of not tolerating certain people, but Marc reminds us that we must. Plus he shows you how. I am a different person for reading this book. Seriously. Buy this book and buy it for a friend.

Inspirational

I have seen Marc speak twice and read his book. I find his stories engaging and inspiring. They motivate me to be a better person and show tolerance to others. I highly recommend this book to all individuals- from adolescents to parents, it will change you for the better.
